Thread regarding Belk layoffs

Overnight Shifts

Just wondering why Belk doesn't have merchandising, and fulfillment overnight. Wouldn't it be easier to meet the tier goal for fulfillment by picking the majority of the units at night, have people start packing at 7am, and finish up during the day? Truck processors can still get the truck unloaded in the early hours, and merchandisers can do their floor moves and put out stuff overnight, all without customers being in the way. Recovery can be done overnight. Go backs from returns can be done overnight. I'm not business expert, but Belk has a whole block of time that can be utilized, and I think some associates wouldn't mind working those hours and being away from the customers. Right now they want people to start picking at 4am. So why not just create a third shift already?

"I hope you being sarcastic about $10 for overnight hours. You probably will be able to hire, but it’s gonna be revolving door without really attractive pay."

Well, it's not just the pay with Belk– you also get the priviledge and prestige of being told to "hurry up!" every day, because "you've got a lot to get to" and "you have to meet your goals". Otherwise, you don't get that sweet, sweet high-dollar, competitive pay that's barely worth driving out and not being allowed a proper meal or toilet break for.

Some people have careers, some people have Belk.

It’s not feasible to hire a group of people at 10 bucks an hour to work a night shift and pick orders or recover and put out stock? Well, if Belk can’t afford to pay $10 an hour then they are up shyt creek without a paddle.

Leanonme, I don’t know what store you’re at, but right now, the average age of our employees is like 60 (or the 19 year old packers, that never learned anything beyond packing), and I can tell you that not a single person, let alone someone with a key, would be willing to work overnight. Also, we’ve been done with the overnight orders in our within an hour, by 7am, so I don’t think there’s enough orders to warrant it. I would LOVE for that to be an option, so that I could go back to the job I was hired for, instead of picking and crying in a corner, but it’s not feasible for a company Belks size.

"They’d never hire extra employees to work overnight, and most current employees wouldn’t take those hours, nor would any managers. I certainly wouldn’t.
Also, they’d have to leave the heat and lights overnight, and they’d never pony up for that."

I would take those hours in a heartbeat. I think others might too. They should at least give stores the option. It might work for some, not for others. Overnight you can just have a lead open the doors and supervise.
Belk barely has the heat on now, and it wouldn't be any different from coming in at 6am to do markdowns with half the lights on.

Most of the time customers just want to know how much something costs, why aren't there more carts, or where they can get the coupons because they don't have any. Last year we had so many holiday orders that some people had to work overnight a few times a week to get the queue down. It helped because we were very overwhelmed.

Part of the idea behind "One" Belk is for those support associates to make it appear as though there are more employees working the sales floor than actually are. This way there are some associates on the floor that customers can ask questions since the actual sales associates are stuck behind the registers.

I think there is enough online shopping to fill the queue overnight. Thinking about number or orders that have reaccumulated hours before the store even closes, at least during the holidays it would be more than enough to keep a third shift busy. Considering that even more people than ever are shopping online due to COVID 19, I wish they would have considered creating a seasonal third shift when they began holiday hiring. A lot of people prefer to work overnight because it gives them the day to take care of things.

You would have to add more employees which means more hours and more payroll expense. Good idea but won't happen

It’s difficult enough to find work/life balance in retail. An overnight shift would be extremely difficult to hire for. Plus, you are assuming the clients who order on line are staying awake all night to fill the que. Probably not.
