Covid Alert at Macys Walt Whitman

Just received a text alert at work this evening that the Macys Walt Whitman store on Long Island has a confirmed positive covid case in the store. The message was vague, but definitive, and announced increased cleaning and that co-workers that may have been exposed will be contacted by HR through contact-tracing. The name of the sick employee was not mentioned (Did not expect otherwise because of privacy laws) but how in God's name is Macys going to "contact trace" to warn those who may have been exposed? The store can't even figure out that the plexiglass barriers that were installed at the wrap stands only work if they are placed where workers and customers have face-to-face contact. Spoiler alert: it's NOT directly in front of the register (which can't catch the virus.)
Contact trace? I don't know about the rest of you, but my day goes something like this: Come to work, help customers and co-workers all day all over the selling floor, including interactions with visual, merchandising, housekeeping, support and management and then cover lunch breaks on other floors with it's own varied set of co-workers. Sound familiar? We don't exactly work in office cubicles. Increased cleaning for our protection? FOLKS THE VIRUS IS ALMOST EXCLUSIVELY AIR-BORNE? Isn't it time to get serious about masks? How about: No mask, no entry. AND MEAN IT.
MOVE THE DAMN PLEXIGLASS WHERE IT MIGHT DO SOME GOOD. BLAST THE AIR CONDITIONING (I know, only if there is a district visit) Maybe the AC unit has a decent HEPA filter on it. One can only hope.

They don’t do any contact tracing at all. My store has had numerous covid cases so many to where it’s normal now and we all are in close contact with each other.

FYI you DO NOT have to test or quarantine EVEN if you were contacted by HR unless YOU want to. Macys cannot FORCE you to covid test contrary to the beliefs of the SHEEPLE

Word is that "patient zero" at the walt whitman store is actually the store manager! So now what? Those most in direct contact are actually: EVERY OTHER MANAGER IN THE STORE. Obviously this presents a problem: will every manager, and I do mean every manager, self-quarantine for a week and then get tested? Three weeks before Christmas? I think not.

It has been a daily occurrence at Herald Square.

There has been a confirmed case of coronavirus at our location.

The Colleague Support Center has connected with the impacted colleague and will perform contact tracing, where they identify people who came into close contact with the colleague 2 days prior to the colleague’s onset of symptoms or positive test date – the day the test was taken, not the day results were returned. Close contact is defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as being within six feet of someone with a confirmed case of COVID-19 for 15 cumulative minutes or more within a 24-hour period.

Had a positive covid case in my store back in March we were told that they reviewed the tapes from the last time that person worked and that anyone that had come into close contact with that person had been notified

No one, company or individual, is following every CDC guideline to a tee 100% of the time. It’s simply unrealistic. Contact tracing isn’t easy, especially in a retail environment. But that, in combination with increased cleaning, IS the guideline for a positive case. Hopefully, the positive colleague will remember anyone they were in ‘close’ contact with ... not every person they may have passed in the aisles. My question: what is the alternate expectation? Do you want them to shut your store down for 2 weeks? Put you and your colleagues back on furlough? Unemployment? Would that show that Macy’s cares about your safety? Make your own choices to feel safe. And remember, Macy’s isn’t responsible for happiness.

my two cents here... Macys does not care if you injured , sick, dying or get a disease from working there.. they have droves of lawyers ready to take down your claim to pennies on the dollar... its a scumbag company full of scumbags running it...

You still crying !!! No one is forcing you to work for the company or the brand that you don't feel comfortable with . Like be thankful that you have a job and looks who is talking about being a jack . I am sure you are following every single rule of being socially distancing that was ever called for . U need to stop crying and be adult enough to step up

Yeah I'm not understanding why everyone is so nasty. Macys does JACK to keep you healthy under any conditions let alone Covid. You can't just say find another job and then poof there it is. Stop defending this POS company. They don't care and will do the barest minimum so along as their asses are covered.

Btw "hepa" autocorrects to "heap" so get off their case and stop being so petty.

wow! if you’re all Macy’s employees, i’m so confused how you wouldn’t sympathize with OP. this is your health, your workplace, your employers choices. does anyone have a brain cell left that hasn’t been politicized? THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS, OP. this is what coworkers do for each other— share insights and ensure safe practices. don’t mind the people who think they’re being radical by defending big business. they’ll learn when covid pops up at their location. good luck 😉

Did this post sound a little whiny? Sure ig but don't act as if Macys is actually doing everything they should to keep us safe up until they created the automated system my store wasn't even doing wellness checks we still don't have the plexi barriers at most of the registers people are walking around maskless and the high touch cleaning position is being used for the candy cart stop acting as if op is a wussy just because they have concerns

Why don’t you just find a job in an office with cubicles. Seems like this is what will make you feel more comfortable.

I think u need a box of tissues to get over with this !!! Like go and get a life and start working somewhere that they have your so called “HEAP” filters in their air conditioning unit or maybe get shifted to Alaska or maybe sit at home and stay in a bubble until u get used to the new normal . “IF IT IS BOTHERING YOU SO MUCH THAN DONT WORK “!!

No such thing as compassion or common sense on this board? People have bills to pay and mouths to feed, so not showing up to work is not that easy nor is just finding another job (which does f— all if you end up in another place where the business is putting "customer comfort" and money before the health and safety of EVERYONE).

We're already "s—ing it up" when we report to work every day and work in close quarters with people we don't share a bubble with. It's not absurd to suggest the company and the managers start giving more of a f— about its employees. Why do I have managers in my store running around interacting with all employees and customers with NO masks? Why are they taking their masks off to talk to me? I observe people doing all kinds of id–tic things in this pandemic. Just no f—s given whatsoever.

No way M is paying y'all enough to lick boots this hard.

I think you just need to get it together and do something better than complaining. The entire world is dealing with what you are facing at work. May be you just need to stay home and lock yourself up in a room!!!!

You sound like a CN* And MS*BC news anchor !! Go and get work at the news channel . Even though I don't work for the company and I do follow this website often with the articles . You just sound one of the Prime time anchors who do a better job than complaining about the damn AC . Make some sense and move on with the new normal

Don’t you think that blasting the air conditioning will make everyone sick. I disagree to the way you are thinking.

I just feel that if someone does not feel comfortable than they should not reporting to work . There are tons of people at the supermarket and probably most of the customers have COVID and you still go and visit that supermarket to get your food. IF YOU DO NOT FEEL COMFORTABLE STOP GOING To THE DAMN SUPERMARKET !! . Do you feel comfortable going to the supermarket and complain them about the same thing of having HEPA FILTER or you get your food delivered through Uber eats . Everyone is going through a touch phase and everyone is getting used to the new normal .
