Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Those of you who have been a part of RA process in the past...

When should we expect a 1 on 1 invite from FLM/SLM? Is this always the route they take for RAs? Is it reasonable to assume that if you do not have a 1 on 1 invite by the end of day on Wed. before RA Thurs. you are safe for this round?

curious to any more info on the process, as my team is still in the dark and from what we heard territories and seller profiles are out on Friday. Many of us are on the edge of our seat waiting for that 1 on 1 invite.

Back in 2019 - the RA cut date had passed and I thought I was safe. I was not. I heard about my RA about a week later. I am not sure of the reason but my manager at the time said he was still advocating for me not to be cut. I was given the 4 months to find a job and I did find one. Just to show how this works though - I was recently hired back to the role I was RA'd from in 2019. At this point I just expect anything to happen any day. Getting RA'd was actually a good thing in the end because it changed my perspective on what is really important in my life overall. Its a scary time and fear sets in first. Then it was like i went thru the stages of grief. I got to acceptance and then I was hired by another team. Apparently though that is pretty unusual. Out of 100s of people I was the only one who found a position. No I do not fit in any odd demographic or have executive family member :-). The main thing though was I got to acceptance that my identity is not just this job or this place even though I have been here almost 30 years. So although I am still employed here - I know that any day I could get that call. Now I take things here with a little more grain of salt. When my husband asks me to lunch I go - when its nice out i take the dog for a walk. If i have to go to the store I do. None of those things used to fit into my life pre RA - it was all about sacrifice and giving 1000% all the time non stop. I have realized more that my family and my sanity are way more valuable to me.

I was RAed twice (I'm in a much better company and pay now). It's on short notice on a Thursday morning, both times. I recall it's a 1-1 with my manager and they go on about their script. Blah, blah, blah, we're terminating you not for your performance but for the company's direction. I got my papers handed to me and I had 90 days employed until I was terminated.

My advice to all who are either effected or not, leave. Please.

Good luck to everyone and especially to those effected!

I was RA’d before. The manager had me on calls late Wednesday night presenting the projects to him. 😂Then, he sent a 1 on 1 call for Thursday morning to let me go. I look back and I laugh as he had no shame, and obviously had no idea what to do with the project because there was nobody left to work on it.

It was not performance related, so I got a job in another team. Later, I learned he had to give the project to another team because he had no one to do it.

As a Manager who has had to do this to several of the employees - this is probably the most painful and hurtful experience anyone has to deal with.

It is no fun firing anyone, leave alone people you care about.

It could come in the morning of "RA Day". Maybe as little as 1 or 2 hour notice.

Until you get the end-of-day call from the manager with the "Your not affected." message its hard to say your clear.

Best of luck..

RA Class of 2019.

agree with other poster - if you get an early day invite, it's bad news. in my case, the manager made sure to hit all the affected folks early in the morning, then notified the rest of the team mid day to let them know they were safe and it was business as usual. Until the next round, when many of those guys got whacked too.

At a previous company, before being acquired by IBM, "affected" employees were told they had been "invited to participate" in the reduction. Gotta love the HR-speak. I suppose one can't decline the invitation.

It can be anything they want. I have been involved with many. Only one did I have a actual invite. That's the last one in June that got me. Prior to that I'd get a sametime/slack asking to talk quick. They normally do the people affected first so if you have an early meeting scheduled that's not good. Those that are safe get the calls later. They have to notify you that your department was "participating" in the latest resource action. I always loved how they made it sound like it was a choice. Also know even if off our out they will find you. Knew one person who was told while attending his mothers funeral. Another gal who was out on maternity leave. When you number is up its up. Managers practice the Cobra Kai motto daily - No Mercy!!

  1. S. Sometimes they will Slack you to say that you are not impacted, so keep that in mind.

In May 2020 I was on vacation the day they notified people who were affected by that RA. I saw the news on Yahoo that day that there was a big layoff so I was aware, but didn't know about this website yet so didn't check here for more info. The day I was back from vacation the following week I got a Slack out of the blue from a different manager in my group asking if I could chat. That person told me I was RA'd.

in my case, it was a 1-1 calendar invite sent early on thurs morning (day of layoff) with my FLM. Topic just said something generic like "1-1 with ...".

sounds like they have some leeway into whether to do it formally with calendar invites or just texts to join a chat.

The answer is no, there's no clear sign. They could just message you with "Hey, can you hop on a webex real quick." Normally, if they have a bunch of employees, they aren't going to setup a meeting invite, instead it'll be ad-hoc "hop on a call". They will tell you either you're safe, or your not. It's that easy. And they are normally all on one day for your whole team/dept.

Wow i like how everyone that left IBM is ALWAYS doing much better, much better pay much better everything... Then why are you switching companies after that one then? Maybe someone is saying the same thing for IBM?

I was RA this past June. Early on a Thursday my manager text me and told me if I can log into Webex. Once in WebEx she said that there was a reduction on my department and I was impacted. Then she sends an email following up. By the way I was RA on the middle of the RA and that was the best thing that ever happened to me. I am currently working for a much better company and making more money. My advice to you is work with Right Management. They really helped me land in an amazing job. February is a good month to find a job. Relax, things will turn for the better.

Isn’t it the normal time period for checkpoint reviews and submission deadlines? A one on one or yearly review discussion this week doesn’t necessarily mean an RA meeting. There may be an RA happening but a meeting with your manager could be other things in mid-Jan.

I got my call in 2018. There was no notice and it was 1 on 1 with my manager. She just called out of the blue and I knew it was bad when she was obviously crying. Mine happened well after a larger layoff. I guess I was part of the "cleanup" after the larger bloodbath. Fortunately I was already sick of looking over my shoulder and had just accepted a new position so, I took the package, had a vacation and now have a job where people are valued. There is Life after IBM and you can be happy. Just realize, if you think you're gonna retire from IBM, think again.

Is it always that the manager initiates the invite?
Never speak to my manager and all of a sudden he’s sniffing around and wanted me to set up a time to talk. I pushed to next week to test if it’s a layoff and he was ok with it being next week. Does that mean I’m safe from this round of RA?

To clarify..

It can be a simple...."hey can you chat now?" request.

So no. It ain't over until it's over

In the same boat as OP. When should we expect an invite? If we don't have one by end of day is that a good sign?

Based on my past experience, a 1-1 call is typically used to formally announce RA to an affected employee. It is also used to assure key people that they are not affected.
