Thread regarding Belk layoffs

Over worked managers??

Hi everyone!

I work at a medium size store, and have been with the company for a few months. I moved from NY to the south and this was the only job that I could find that paid “decently;” $42k a year. While I know that is A LOT, compared to many of my great sales associates who are making $10-$13 an hour. The only other job I could find when I moved down here paid roughly $15 an hour. Plus the SM fooled me by offering me $39k, when I know for a fact that the other managers are making $48k+

In my store as an STM I have had to do everything. Housekeeping, merchandising, truck processing, selling, daily 100 item pick lists for fulfillment. And many more. But my question is how many hours are other managers working ? My SM will schedule us weekly for 45, but EVERYDAY that he/she is working it is expected that we do not leave until he/she leaves. That tends to be 1-2 hours past 5pm. Our SM clearly has no “life” outside of work; no hobbies, friends??, no kids or marriage. It seems like the other managers in my store are accustomed to this... My SM even made a remark how it was great that I had no kids, and my fiancé had a job.

This past week I worked 54 hours due to inventory prep. My SM has scolded me, and just blatantly ignored me for days straight when I had to leave the store at my scheduled time. Is this normal? Is this the work culture that the company has cultivated ? What can I do ? No wonder the previous STM left. If you think I should just leave the company overall comment that !

If you are working 50 plus hours you aren’t making much more per hour than the lowly sales associates.

STM
Until a few months ago, I worked for belk for many years. I have since moved on to another company. For over 10 years, I was a STM than an MTM.
I worked most weeks around 45 hours but my store manager never scheduled me for that. I was scheduled for 40. To my knowledge, they are NOT supposed to schedule you more than 40 .... but of course the expectations are for you to work until the job is done. Wellll .... it’s never done. You could stay there 24/7 and there will be tasks still waiting for you.
During inventory week, I would say what you worked was a typical inventory week, especially if your store manager did not have you slowly preparing during Christmas for inventory prep.
Good or bad, Belk is not the company it once was under the belk family. If you are questioning the way things are... I would say look for something else and work the 45 hours you are scheduled in the mean time.

I will say that most retail management jobs will tell you upfront that their expectations are for you to work 45-50 hours but Belk will not.
The problem with belk is the level of labor they expect their managers to do. And with this they have gotten in trouble in the past and been sued. ( Don’t know if they won or lost)
Managers are supposed to spend most of their day managing those around them with doing a small percentage in labor. That’s one reason the labor laws say that a company can work managers more hours with no extra pay. Anyway... that’s how it was explained to me. I’m sure it’s not exact.
An example... Lowe’s ...( haven’t heard lately ; their managing model could have changed)... schedule there managers 50 hours but they typically spend their day managing and directing their staff. So Lowe’s expectations are 50plus hrs.

Sorry you are dealing with this. I would also say it sounds like you have a terrible manager. You have also moved to the south where work laws, as a whole favor, the company.

"you can get a job paying $42k selling cars PART TIME. working 54 hrs for $42k is not worth it."

Reminds me of the old David Letterman shows:

Come on down to Harrison Ford 'n find deals outta this world! Bring the wife, we'll dicker (over price).

Nice model. Turns corners like a snake-in-a-rathole.

I cant believe that person thinks $42000 is "decent" pay. Does she know her store manager makes $100k & up and does half the work she does. Thats why I would not go out of my way to help a store manager, let them do it themselves!

Store Managers at Belk are encouraged to squeeze all they can out of anyone who works there. It is just what the company has evolved into during the past decade. It will not get better.

Actually retail is not like this everywhere. Belk is turning into a "kmart" type store, with junk merchandise. Someone only making $42K should not be working 54 hrs a week, that's crazy.

Hi! Don’t work for Belk but this sounds like retail life in general...s—s you have a manager with no life trying to take you down with them.
