IBM CPAT team gone

Heard from a buddy there was an RA - the entire CPAT team is gone. Just a few were moved to other positions and the rest - nearly 200 folks - have to look for jobs in other teams IF they can find them. Not sure how successful they'll be in that considering the current state of the entire company...

What happened to these folks? Did they all find new positions?

Were folks on this team able to find other jobs or was it just a head start on today's cuts?

Can’t be Huge as there is no one left IBM wants to exit the HW business as hybrid cloud is HW agnostic

I was this many days old minus one when I learned that CPAT existed, and this many when I learned what it stood for. And apparently I'm not alone. Yet my product is deeply entangled with Cloud Paks. I think that says a lot about how useful they were.

Don't get me wrong, I have sympathy for the individuals involved. But 100 people at the center of our supposed key GTM vehicle, and many of us don't even know what they do? Sadly, this is exactly the kind of cuts that are necessary if any part of IBM is going to survive.

BTW, I also don't know what IBM Garage does, and that's after reading their web pages.

The Cloud Paks are purely financial engineering products. Look Ma: cloud revenue for 30 year old technology!

Did CPAT really do much? Are we basically calling it that Cloud Paks is a pretty poor offering and heading in a different direction?

where was CPAT ? Austin, RTP, NY, ..... If a major site, they have a better chance of finding jobs, if Austin, there are a ton of high tech jobs outside IBM, pick of the litter

It is a soft RA in that no one is technically fired, just that the CPAT (Cloud Pak Acceleration Team) which is 1 year old and over 200 members mainly B 6 - 7's Developers and Data Scientists has been dissolved. And some (someone said 10%) have been selected for Customer Relationship Management org, the remainder are working with Managers to find other positions. All this is happening by the end of January '21. However no one is explicitly terminated as of yet.

"Reorganization" doesn't look like this does. When there's a reorg, you get told who you are going to report to next. This time, there are entire teams across the company that are being told that the headcount for that team has been "eliminated". So, in other words, a way to say that you are still an employee, but we don't have a job to pay you for and we'll just let that work itself out.

I have heard from a reliable source that this is primarily a reorganization. The Garage and CPAT group were moved into the Customer Relationship Management group in C&CS. There's a number of internal executive blogs on this - it's related to the GTM changes. They have the headcount/financials to take on all of the CPAT people, and they're identifying people that won't be happy in this new group and moving them to core product developers in C&CS.
