Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Will severance payment affect unemployment benefits?

I received my severance package but I am still unemployed now.
How should I report it, income?

How long does it take to get first UI benefits from CA after you applied. It is so hard to get in touch with someone on the phone.

I have been receiving it for months. Received the severance early Jan and UI check keep coming, including the $300 uplift, perhaps $400 more from Biden.
Just search for 3 jobs per week will meet the requirements.

Unemployment Insurance in all 50 states is for “unemployed” people only, in case some of you think otherwise. After being laid off from Chevron, you are (were) entitled to receive UI benefits from the State, and maybe even an extra uplift of $300 per week from our Federal government as part of the CARES Act. But, if you were fortunate enough to find employment so quickly, congratulations. You get a paycheck now, but won’t receive UI benefits. When I retired from Chevron in 2016, I applied for my Texas unemployment benefits and got it easily, even with the 1-year severance check from Chevron. I received all 6 months of unemployment from the State and really didn’t look for work.

Unfortunately Texas will not pay UI if you found new work or were otherwise unavailable to work at a new job.

I applied the day after December 14th.

At the time I had not signed the release and I didn’t report it. I don’t even remember being asked about it. I would now if they asked me... but they haven’t.

To stay eligible you have to be looking for work and willing to work if offered., such as applying to at least 3 jobs per week. I plan on drawing this out as long as possible.

Yes, that is correct. In Texas, you should commit a felony and lie on your state unemployment insurance form in order to get a few dollars in handouts.

You don't have to report the severance pay as income because it is "supplemental income" and not earnings. You will still need to apply for Unemployment and "report" that you are searching for jobs.

If you are in Texas, do not report it as it is not guaranteed severance per your employment contract. It is a legal payoff. And yes, Chevron did layoff more due to COVID so you qualify for enchanted payments.

It asks you specifically and lists they type of payments you’re expecting to receive. I reported my last check with included three weeks vacation and my expected severance. I am approved and have received my card with two weeks approved. I’m expecting to not qualify for just the week I receive the payment in. Other than that, I’m expecting to be approved the entire time. My expectations is based on friends that have been through it all ready. Good luck. Just report all honestly. I also put down it was due to reduction in staff NOT Covid. LOL I told the truth for everything. Which we all should.
