Thread regarding Imperial Oil Limited layoffs

My stress level is off the charts

So I'm a new hire (just had one year) with IOL. I survived this round of layoffs but now theres talk of more layoffs next year? 6 new EIT's were laid off in my group, and now we have more managers to "supervise" us than people actually doing the work. But looking at IOL does things, they'll put the bottom of command (so people in my position) at the top of the firing chain and honestly its just exhausting. I've quadrupled my workload and was told that "I'm lucky that i didnt get laid off". I've already started job hunting because urgh this company is physical trash. Its only "good" when everything goes according to plan.

Controllers is used as training for engineers/management. These people aren’t expected to do anything besides refresh spreadsheets and make pretty slides. There is no real accounting work at Imperial.

I too am a new hire, previously having worked for one of the big 4 public accounting firms. The compensation is good but the kind of work assigned is basic and amateurish. Managers and Supervisors are consistently indecisive and lack technical knowledge. Every process or activity is geared towards Exxon stewardship. I am not learning anything new. Job satisfaction is zero. Apparently, irrelevant "step out" projects are a must to gain visibility and demonstrate competance while making your supervisor look good. The work environment is toxic and colleagues are superficially nice but in reality back stabbers.

I am looking to jump ship when the economy improves. I cannot take these stress levels any more.

I was doing the work of 3 people, including my boss’s, because she was busy on culture committees for visibility. Guess who was thrown under the bus and laid off?

Have an exit strategy, folks.

For any recent hires, I'd start planning your exit strategy. The company is continuing to shrink headcount, and there will be fewer interesting roles in the future with no significant projects or expansions on the horizon. It's basically just coming down to trying to squeeze $ out of existing assets and execute marching orders coming from EM. For someone with a long career ahead of you, I'd start looking elsewhere as Imperial will have fewer opportunities in the future.

Just stay put. Let them fire you, and you will get severance plus EI. Only jump ship if you find a good job.

I can understand your situation and how you feel. Try to hold on as long as possible and continue to do your job as best as you could, because those are the only items under your control. However, if your manager/supervisor/team-lead is a paper-pusher/ incompetent/toxic, there's nothing you can do to save yourself (even if you are a high performer) unless you are lucky or buddies with them. Also maintain a positive attitude (FAKE IT if need be) in this environment by not raising any concerns, highlighting ineffeciencies or fix things as it will likely be used against you since you have given them an easy opportunity. The gaslighting that'll follow is the worst part and will add more fuel to the fire. Continue with your job search and keep your spirits high. Good luck !

You just need to go to your manager, give them the list of work you have at hand, and the time est. Have them prioritize for you, and provide status updates as you move along. All this in writing.

Those who survived this time will have to go through tons of work load and huge stresses. The way company is behaving either you will resign by yourself or you will go to hospital due to over stress. Either cases, Company won’t have to pay you the package.

No matter what you do (can work 18 hr under incompetent Manager), it won’t save your job unless you are lucky. Most of the recent laid off employees were high efficient and super performed professionals on their field, however due to baseless studies ( high salaried, recent experienced hire, less package money, visible minority mostly) company let them go. Many past hired employees (15/16 yrs with the company) are looking for jobs for last 5 months. Some are unsuccessful to find a job due to current situation. Some got and resign.

Give minimum time to IOL work and look for other opportunities. However, Company’s policy will be keeping you brutally busy you won’t find any time to look for jobs. Just think what they did for last 4 months. Good luck!

Emit is worse. Everyone on the management team is basically sending emails all day to their peers talking about the latest article they read on LinkedIn and liking each other's posts on yammer.

Yah same. My workload doubled in September after the ranking sessions, and again after they laid off a whole bunch of EIT's in my department. My supervisor is literally only supervising me, and at this point i could do his job - but I doubt he could do mine since he's a glorified paper pusher.

But WE ALL KNOW that when ranking comes, he'll throw me under the bus instead of him.
