With such lackluster Black Friday results, what will happen in 2021? Mass store closures, bankruptcy, any ideas or “inside” information?

I've been shopping in Columbia, SC store's for the past 10 years. In 2019 the Columbiana Mall Belk store started to go down after their Spring Charity Day Sale.
That store used to be the best one in the Metro area. They have lesser staff than previously and their store is three floors. The pricing is always different at checkout than what's advertise and or posted on the fixture. The good associates who are knowledgeable about the merchandise are not working in specific areas because they are now greeters. (If I wanted to be greeted I'll go to a Wal-Mart.)
Also, if you should have any issues while shopping or at checkout make sure you have time to spare. First, there's only 10 registers out of 25 that are open. I walked up to a customer service desk to check out. I saw no sign posted that it was closed. Therefore, I asked the gentleman who was working in the area if possible could you check me out. He turns around and says, "Oh, that register is closed today but you can check out over in the YC department". Excuse Me, but I don't know where YC is much less what it stands for. I left my items at that customer service desk and walked out.
Second, we tried to give them another try but if the associate should need a manager just leave. I had to wait in line for an extra 45 minutes because there was an issue with a customer's credit card. It took the associate 10 minutes to get a manager on the phone.
If the store manager can't help the customers during these trying times then they should close all stores. If the Columbiana Mall Belk store closes it's for the best. I don't know the last time I went in that store and saw associates who were happy to be at work, willing to assist you with your shopping and was knowledgeable to give me advice about my purchase. I wish the best for those associates who are there now during this pandemic.
I work pt
Management is terrible
The stock levels are horrible.
Belk merchandise looks so outdated and nothing for younger hipper crowd.
At 6 pm there is absolutely no one in here shopping.
Everything centers around buying online
Sad.
Belk used to be an amazing retailer.
Another gone by the wayside retailer😓😓😓bc of bad decisions and bad management
There is such a lack of communication with the managers in the store where I work. You can never get a manager on the phone if you need one. It is difficult to find anyone in the department they were hired for, especially Cosmetics. The day you work is the day you find out where you will be that day. Scheduling is ridiculous. Associates are moving from department to department all day long covering breaks. If an associate has special training in a specific area it is useless. Terrible management.
Verge of bankruptcy, They are struggling trying to delay filing
I work at a large Belk store. We had very good holiday sales. Stores are filling on line and curbside pickup orders in addition to in store shopping, resulting in low stock. January is our inventory month. Typically low every January. We are receiving stock fills already.
Management is terrible
I asked in November because the stock in some departments seemed low. They said no, they were flourishing. I was back in today and the stick seemed even lower all across the store. Some departments in the back didn't even have lights on. I ended up not finding anything I wanted, which is unusual.
Belk is selling out of everything. Low hours prevents stocking and replenishment. Running on skeleton crew and hours. With lovely shoppers and positive workers, Belk will shake this off!
Belk mayfair nc seemed so old..polyester cheap made in china clothes
Laid off employee in 2020. Belk hasn't had any real leadership since Sycamore purchased them. There isn't any real strong initiatives that have made a difference in sales or customer satisfaction. Store visits by mid level managers mainly focus on merchandise displays and very little on core functions of the stores operations. There isn't any inventory management and merchandise thefts have increased dramatically. Mid level managers make little/no effort to talk to store team leads to understand what is going on in the stores. Communication about changes in the stores doesn't exist at all. This past Christmas the store inventory was way down compared to previous years. I would expect to see store closings occurring this year.
Is it true that Belk's is closing stores and giving away cosmetic items?
Most Belk stores are now doing online orders so the inventory is going out of the store faster so it looks empty
Is belk closing ain meridian
Is belk in ogelthorpe mall closing
Belk is not closing or going out of business. Some segments of retail faired well during the COVID-19 shutdown and some did not which was a direct result of being deemed an essential retailer or not. Belk maintained a robust online business during the shutdown. When stores reopened traffic was down however a lot of that was due to COVID restrictions and limits put in place nationwide and most mall based businesses have suffered from being non-essential retail and reduced traffic flow. Belk was not struggling before COVID as were stores like JC Pennies, Macy’s, and Sears. It is more likely that those companies go under before Belk does. Even the large gains by major big box retailer are not sustainable long term. Some 1st and 2nd quarter retail predictions for 2021 are cautioning a spending retraction that will stave off the large gains in over performing discount retail sector.
The Belk Mayfaire NC is dirty..the help complaining about pay & hours...
I was in the Land O Lakes store today and if that store is not closing in January, it should be. Entire sections were blocked off and given the caliber of store holiday decore it was not a successful sales season. It looked tragic. Sadly, this chain or at least this store location is closing. It was horrid.
The "Christmas rush" is not happening at the Belk store I work at (as a seasonal worker). There's heavy traffic for only a couple hours a day, usually mid-day, even on the weekends. People (customers/shoppers) are complaining about one long line to return items–which I was told was a "corporate requirement." I told the manager that people don't give a ratsass about that, they don't like waiting in a long line. Short on cashiers (people who used to be"real sales associates." License is about to expire on one of their software apps–that should be interesting. Management at the store I work in has an underlying frantic attitude: "we will do anything for the customer...if we can just make a sale." Store is a mess, shortage of inventory becoming very obvious, several vendors no longer carried. More store brands.
“It’s not just Belk it’s all mall and walk in retail”
- not necessarily true. A good friend works for Von Maur (a family owned Midwest department store)
And they haven’t closed any stores or laid off any employees, supposedly they are doing fine. You never hear anything bad about them either.
It's not just Belk. It's all mall and walk in retail. Online with smaller fulfillment centers is the future.
Possibly a shake up in the executive team. Belk has some of the most lackluster leadership in the retail industry.
I’m guessing store closures especially in high-rent areas and malls. belk seems to be cost cutting and making belk a “bargain outlet
