Thread regarding Imperial Oil Limited layoffs

Company not worthy

In the past 5+ years I have noticed leadership failing and it is not entirely surprising given that people who are currently leading this company does not know sh*t. We saw that when MT (a past great leader) asked the question during the employee forum the other day about why we are no longer profitable at a $40 oil price when we have been in the past...a statement that BC responded by saying that was not true when in fact it was.

How confident are you with the leaders in this company? An outdated ranking system that will not change for the better, assessing individuals you have never met or spoken to, allowing toxic work environments to flourish, promoting the a** kissers, demoting the quiet and hard working worker bees, and the list goes on.

Of course there are good leaders too, but they are starting to vanish and the culture has got to a point where they are promoting the bad ones where they are all exhibiting similar bad traits.

It is so sad to see the state of this company. Young people continue to get smarter and it is no wonder why we continue to see so many attrition with new hires.

If the company is paying me to quit, then I will happily accept!

With 42 years in the petrochemical/refining industry the two worst words I have ever heard is “share holder value”. Imperial Oil will throw talented employees under the bus to keep their artificially inflated dividend value. Over the past years they have sold everything they could to keep that dividend alive. Nothing left to sell so it’s time to get rid of the overhead. Technologically speaking they are dinosaurs when it comes to risk taking on upgrading their plants. Only when forced by government regulation are they forced to update anything. It is pretty sad to see an oil major bury their heads in the sand.

Are you surprised that we are reaping what was sowed not so long ago. We operate as a charity, nurturing and attempting to revive bad performers, where our competitors would not hesitate to get rid of such employees. Demagogues who only posses the gift of the gab and no other skills are prized. New hires will tell you that other than PowerPoint skills they learn nothing of substance in the positions for which they were hired. If this continues, the company is doomed. Less is more...

Funny. You read the comments over on the Husky and Cenovus and there are some common threads:

  1. C-ap leadership that gets the company into trouble then lays off employees
  2. A$$ kissers getting the promotions
  3. Overall feeling that HR is full of the worst human beings possible

It must be the same regardless of what company you are at.

If you are a bully, you will do well in this company. Bullying behaviour is highly encouraged.

The whole HR group in charge of culture should be fired for cause for not performing. They have accomplished nothing. They help no one. People get bullied and file complaints on their bosses and they get penalized for speaking up.

Having worked at Kearl since before the operation got going I can tell you a lot of the leadership issues stemmed from hiring a couple individuals at the top. The mine leadership was hired from Fort Hills, after Suncor took over from Petro they canned the entire lot. We hired 2 people to run the mine from there and they scooped all their Fort Hills friends up. It’s reverberated through the site to this day as some of them are still there making terrible (or no) decisions and running the place into the ground. They’re only all there to collect db pensions with benefits and get out because they lost everything when Suncor let them go.

What has changed since the cultural survey result promises? Renaming the ranking quintiles? Forcing a culture change requires new leaders from the ground up, something that will never happen in this company. It is a corrupt place with a corrupt HR department.

Exactly, you are getting paid to quit. No one wants to be here anyways, most are here for a pay check. It’s not worth it, this culture change BS has been going on for years with zero noticeable changes. HR is the most useless department and they need to be dissolved. You take any culture issues with HR and they blame you as the problem.
