I guess we've finally reached the point when we're literally sc-aping the bottom of the barrel. We've always had high turnover but lately it's been ridiculous. People either start one they and never show up again or start one day and are asked never to show up again. At this point, a semi-competent employee who doesn't have his or her head stuck in their phone 24/7 would be a welcome sight.

Retail doesn’t equal to making food. Haha!
Walmart did it to themselves. Some of the c-appiest pay in retail. C-appy hours; you work what they tell you so you can't have any semblance of a life outside the company and barely enough hours to pay your monthly bills. C-appy benefits; you aren't allowed to get the hours you need to even get benefits. C-appy work environment; you are doing the job of 2-3 people under ridiculous expectations.
What do you expect? Walmart is so desperate for associates to stock the shelves they hire the cream of the c-ap - the unskilled, d–g addicts and the undependable.
No one with any self-worth will ever join this company unless they are desperate and Walmart is their last resort.
There was a time when this wasn't the case. When associates could actually climb the company ladder. When people were proud to work at Walmart and actually have a career there. Where associates were rewarded with decent pay raises and acknowledged and respected for their hard work and dedication. Those times are long gone never to return.
You have to remember that retail is classified as unskilled labor just like fast food and other industries. Turnover is always high.
