Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Which organization/department is the most toxic?

Tl,dr: Comment which organization treats its employees the worst.
I’ve been on this forum for a couple months now hearing about the terrible treatment of my fellow employees and the incompetency of many of their superiors. I’m curious if there are certain groups that are far worse than others in terms of culture and atmosphere. Also curious how much different it is working in the field vs in the office environment. Disclaimer, I’ve been here 5-10 years and have always had great supervisors/mangers I directly reported to. Never felt worthless or unheard. I’ve had one role requiring quite a bit more hours of work from me than my peers, but honestly, I felt valued (whether it was true or not). I’m in Controllers and I’m wondering if the engineers, marketers, HR (doubt it), IT, etc. generally has a more terrible culture than the other. My experience could easily be related to the fact that I haven’t been part of the company long enough to deal with “incompetent middle managers” (having only directly reported to supervisors and a couple managers).
Unexpected PIPing aside, which groups are treated the worst on a daily basis from your experience? T

HR. Very top heavy organization with too many overpaid managers that add no value. Leadership by fear culture over the past couple of years. Staff knows most of their jobs will be moved to low cost countries over the next couple of years. Those under age 40 realize they may not be able to one day retire from the company.

Judging by these comments, it sounds like other groups have more toxic individuals...

Controllers has a special blend of arrogance, ignorance and backstabbing that is only rivaled by Lubes.

Dang. Going back to the original question of which groups are treated the worst, it’s controllers? All the people makiBy by posts about their managers making them feel worthless and the abuse are in controllers? Definitely thought it would have spanned across more groups.

I’m not a controller but come on your targeting controllers when it is clear that the toxic environment runs through the entire company. It is worse since you decided to shuffle them around at reorg.

I’ve worked in a few different functions and generally agree that Controllers is the worst by a pretty big margin. Every other function will have its bad apples, but I have not seen the consistent level of toxicity outside of controllers. They historically have by far the highest turnover in the corporation to show it as well.

ExxonMobil is a failing company. We have seen talented, hard working employees being PIPed for asking questions, reporting harassment to HR, being older or female, or just because a manager with a fragile ego doesn’t like them. More will be fired or Will find better jobs and leave. Only the bullies can survive in this environment. Soon ExxonMobil will be left only with incompetent bullies, and will fail even faster.

Limited gender diversity in finance mid management, noticeably in certain countries. Baby little fights to win that small pack of Hershey's kisses and no real valuable work done. Purpose? That probably explains why birds of a feather flock together?

CSR and ASL management are full of bullies

I would vote controllers. We in the business do all the hard work to generate opportunities and these are shot down by inexperienced controllers who do not know how to account for it or it is something outside their narrow range of experience.

Within the finance function in Canada the Tax group, in general, is perhaps the most competant. They have hired highly experienced tax resources and they are treated well for the insights they provide in creating viable tax avoidance strategies.

The worst, inept and toxic group is Controllers. The functional Controllers are paper pushers with no real authority other than undeservedly promoting their proteges to non-existant middle management positions. These positions, it is believed, are simply created out of thin air to promote gender diversity.

Despite a reduction in work load and bulk of the transactional accounting being performed at the BSC in the southern hemisphere, new hires are added. Strength in numbers is what they believe in.

Heard similar stories, probably true.

Worked in multiple functions and departments. Finance Function—Controllers in particular—is the most toxic. Few people do any valuable or meaningful work. Most are just playing politics. Haven’t come across anyone in Controllers interested in truly changing things to be more efficient and effective. People just care about being visible to get ahead—and throwing others under the bus when they feel threatened.
