Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

I’m going to decline my offer

After reading everything here and talking to an alumni who was honest I’ve decided to decline the job offer I was made. Makes no sense to move to Houston for a job in this culture only to be fired shortly after arriving.

I agree. Small chance of surviving for very long if they are cutting so much. Will just replace us with next years even more desperate grads at a lower salary.

If you haven't reaffirmed your initial thoughts by now.
Stay out!

@nra+17jtO276 You don't want to relocate to Houston and then find yourself wanting to move out afterwards. Thousands or maybe hundreds of thousands of unemployed Houstonians now trying to find that new employer who'd relocate them out of Houston.

Just take the offer and reneg after you get another offer? It’s always good to have a backup option.

XOM is probably relieved you are not coming. They won’t rescind the offer. I think you are better off going into an industry that is thriving at this point. Joining XOM now is risky.

@hxx+17jtO276 some people want to work hard then go home and raise a family and live life. XOM s—s the life out of you. The best and brightest understand there's more to life than kissing a$$ in a dinosaur industry. Your arrogance doesn't resonate with the investment community of their opinion on how XOM is run compared to their competitors.

Exxon still employ the “best and the brightest” but from the pool of people that couldn’t get employed in a future proof industry. What can Exxon offer a graduate that comes close to the many tech companies around? Move to a booming industry or join a firm that is fighting to stay alive? I know which option I would choose. There are cultural differences nowadays that effect decision making and the environmental impacts of Exxon will be a problem for some graduates. I’m not sure some money invested on some algae project is going to cut the mustard!

You could take the job, get a good name on your resumè, then start applying to tech companies in Austin.

I don't think that moving to Texas now is good advice with the projected layoffs from oil in nearing 100,000, all in the same geography ...

See if your employer will pay for your move. There are other good companies in Texas and many more are moving out there - so if the job doesn't work out, you will be no better off than before. If there are no other offers, just take this one just to ride out the slump. Any job you can get now will still be experience to put on your resume. Who knows? It may turn out to be a good opportunity. If the job doesn't last, no need to include it on your resume and future employer will probably not hold it against you as we are living in strange times.

How relevant was the loss of the 401k match in your decision?

I got hired by XOM last year but got PIP'd just after my 1 year anniversary. It's just so strange that I received in the mail my 1 year lapel pin. What should I do with this lapel pin. Crush it with a hammer? Put it in the oven, maybe it will turn to gold?

We only hire the best and the brightest. Rejecting the offer only means you didn’t meet our cut. Ciao!

Good job people. I was let go by XOM after serving them for more than 20 years and what happened to me could happen to you if you choose XOM. They want younger blood all the time and of course you will grow old too. Go somewhere where your talent and contributions will be appreciated and you'll be happier.

New hires used to get a year grace period before being ranked. Not this year! 8% were categorized as needing significant improvement and shown the door, even if less than a year at the company.

I’m considering doing the same. I don’t want to have the first job on my resume after graduating end with a firing less than a year after being hired.
