This post was spot on. A layoff has nothing to do about the employee and everything to do about the management and executive teams. All I can say is that many people will go through completely different emotions. When I was laid off, it was fear, worthlessness, and what will happen to my family. Another person laid off, single no kids and obligations, was happy. I talked with her and how she was so positive. She said both her parents were laid off at the same time in the 2008 downturn. They struggled immensely. Ever since, she learned from her parents to never let an employer ruin your happiness. It changed my perspective, changed how I attacked finding a new job, and played a huge role in my decision. One of the job offers I was juggling at the time was Cisco. If I had taken that position, I would have been in the same boat today as I was a year ago. Being laid off opened my eyes on what I really cared about and what was important to me: family, traveling, less stress, and just a completely different attitude towards life.

My advise to those affected is to stay positive. There are jobs out there but it is going to be more difficult to get. Look at other industries. Don't be afraid of the pay cuts on a new job. You just have to readjust how you will manage finances. Don't knock a job's salary if they offer better benefits. I took a job with a pension AND the same 401k match as any IT company. I get the 3% match and a 100% match to pension. Yes, I have to pay 8% to a pension fund, but they pay 8% as well. On an 11% investment, I get 11% from my employer as well. 22% of my salary per year goes to retirement. It's about $20k per year. The lower cost of health insurance and premiums make up the pay cut. I actually take home more money. Its crazy.

If you take the bullet you will then be invited to a Friday one way meeting where HR takes turns reading scripts. Its like listening to announcements at a bus depot.
Dont waste your time.

So based on Ciscos internal policy you are supposed to get a at risk email that your job is going away. A team I know of just received a Mandatory Webex invite for tomorrow in the am. HR is on the optional list as well as a Mex Sr Manager. The person who scheduled this webex is not the teams manager but a SR Manager which oversees their manager. I am thinking this is not good.

In my experience...You will either have a 1:1 scheduled that may get moved up to an AM time, or you will receive a 1:1 from your Manager (not HR). Your manager will not engage with you prior to this meeting in chat or IM. If you reach out they will likely not answer. They will immediately start off the call with a script they read, at the end asking if you have any questions. You may be so shocked you have none, if so, the call ends and that may be the last time you talk to your manager. There is no emotion, no sorry I wish it wasn't you, no deviation from the script. Once everyone on the team is notified the management will meet with anyone left and advise as to who is gone from the team and they may tell the team not to reach out to you (this was my experience). You will feel like a piriah. Do not judge the value of your worth on this moment in time. Being LRed does not mean you are a bad employee or person. This moment is not a reflection of your entire career. Go forward and be reminded of what really makes you happy. You are full of marketable experience. It took me months to get over the feeling of worthlessness but I know now it was all for nothing. I should have spent more time enjoying my time off. Get your resume professionally written, search LinkedIn for top industry tech terms for your line of work and include those in your "about me". Swallow your pride and reach out to colleges over the life of your career and ask for LinkedIn recommendations or introductions to jobs of interest. Search out the certs and specializations that demand the highest pay in your area of specialty. Go on.

In the past I've seen that managers meet with those getting LR'd in the morning. Then later in the day to tell the others that they are safe.
ER'd out of there myself. Best of luck to y'all.

I already had a standing 1:1 with my manager every Wednesday at 8:30am so I guess I won’t know till I’m on the call. So frustrating.
