Thread regarding Marathon Petroleum layoffs

Did they just get rid of a bunch older employees?!

All the people I know who've been laid off are over 50! All the twenty-somethings and thirty-somethings are still here, and some of our best and most experienced employees are gone! This shouldn't have happened! If this isn't age discrimination, I don't know what is!

The reason you have to sign the release is the know they are wrong and broke the law.
Talk to a good labor lawyer before you sign away many times what the package is worth!

If you get tapped close to retirement eligibility, will you be able to "retire"?

From what I’ve seen, it’s even between people who are above 50 and below 40. It also seems like it was the lower performing employees in some cases, but seems pretty random in others.

I'm 59 and still have a job. So not necessarily age. What I noticed is that underperforming people that were not white males are safe. Only white males laid off here.

Sorry, many of the older folks needed to leave. Outdated info, against flexible work schedules, too comfortable in there position.

The only ones in my group cut were older and closer to retirement. Though, I'm seeing a lot of cuts affecting 20-something year olds just at their 1 year mark. Salaries vs role definitely played a part in why a lot of older folks were cut - especially those at recently acquired plants where the previous company's salaries were higher than what MPC liked.

I'm 51 have just under 10 years with the company but less than 1 in my area. My job was safe but I believe a couple of non exempt were let go. They had more experience in the area, younger. I was surprised as I heard exempts were getting cut more.

In our area, two over 50, one in late 20s and one in 30s.

In order to receive the package deal, employees must sign a release of rights and agree not to file a lawsuit against the company. I.e. cannot sue for discrimination if they accept the severance package.

I've seen both those close to retirement and those who are quite young (20's and 30's) cut.

I’m Over 50 with more than 30 years of service and was cut with a short phone call. No thank you. Not even allowed to retrieve my personal contents. This isn’t the same Marathon that our previous CEO worked so hard to build. Honestly I feel for everyone that still works there not knowing what’s going to happen from one day to the next. We were always stressed that Marathons image is everything. Well their image is getting a big black eye now.

In my area older guys are being terminated and their positions refilled with younger guys from other parts of the company. So they are not eliminating the position just eliminating the guys who’s close to retirement.

Sorry to upset you. I am under 50. They let three people in my group go who were in their 20s. One had been here less than 6 months.

That's not what I've seen in my area. I just got cut, I'm 43, just been with the company a little less than one year. In our region's IT, the younger, less experienced guy got cut while the much older, very talented and experienced guy still has his job. I did see exactly what you said, age discriminating cuts at DCP Midstream a year ago.

It's called looking at your imposed budget cuts and cutting the more expensive resources. In some scenarios you can save two jobs by cutting one. It s—s, but the alternative is not viable either.
