Thread regarding Bed Bath & Beyond layoffs

Covid cases

How many of you work in a store with confirmed Covid cases and the SM is doing nothing about it??My ASM lied to all of us that we didn’t work with someone who tested positive...but we found out who that person was and most of the store had worked with that person a few days prior...and we wonder why cases are souring! Since that positive case we have had 2 others out waiting on results.
Who can you report this to?

FYI, there are some ignoring covid exposure reports, because they don't want to close for emergency cleaning. GREAT PLACE TO WORK ( no one ever said ). :)

Take a look at the posts for some of the stores you named. Seems very similar to the posts here ..including the ones about Covid

Maybe they haven't because people do not speak up. Seriously..posting on here is one thing but is anyone contacting their DM? corporate? Their state regulatory agencies? Even the media? Or are you frightened you are going to lose your job? And things are not as rosy at other stores as you may think. Those chains have thousand of stores so nobody knows what goes on in each one. Speak up people!

I agree Covid was new and state recommendations/ regulations are murky. I understand that but we have been in it for 8 months now. Covid cases keep spiking and will continue during this winter. These companies Walmart, Target , Costco, BJ's wholesale, Sams Club, Home Depot, Lowes & Best Buy stopped waiting and built onto state and federal covid regulations to protect their employees -why hasn't BB&B yet?

I'll tell you why because they're taking advantage of these murky waters and exploiting their front line workers. Since they also keep their BB&B covid rules murky store employees will find it harder to sue, harder to properly safeguard coworkers/customers and still keep the store opened. Even when current employees have come into contact with covid or are sick and continue to come in because they're told to. All this so BB&B doesn't have to pay for a cleaning crew, hire more employees if current have to quarantine, because it will affect their bottom line.

Union Dude (do you mind if I call you dude?) Thanks for your clarification. I am in no way, shape or form defending BBB but part of the "problem" with their lack of regulations in that Covid is so new and state recommendations/ regulations is that everything is so murky. ..I defend states rights but in this emergency I think there should be national mandates. Also governments are choosing profits over people by having so many things partially opened and/or deemed essential. I hope more people start to speak up..be it to your SM, DM, Senator, Mayor, Congressperson.

Union guy here- information about covid is different for each store. These are guidelines that were given to managers of these stores, Walmart, Target , Costco, BJ's wholesale, Sams Club, Home Depot, Lowes & Best Buy by their corporate offices. I was not saying that they were coming from the state or federal government. Their corporate offices took federal and state rules and added another layer to protect their store employees. What I am saying is BB&B does not currently have any rules given to their store managers so, SM and ASM are making up or interpreting state and federal rules. Looking at all the current covid exposures at BB&B stores you the employees are the least of their concern. They are keeping stores open after covid cases are reported, no deep cleaning after, not alerting coworkers, and not paying workers when exposed to covid at work- making them use sick leave or vacation time. Their main concern is sales and not the store employees.

Not sure where the union guy got that info. But my friend works at Best Buy and told me when he gets to work they temperature check him before he can start working. They have had a coworker test positive a month ago for covid and the company let employees know that they worked with someone who tested positive didn't mentionhis name, but they figuredout who it was. They asked him to quarantine and if he wanted to get paid for the 14 day quarantine he needed to take a covid test and then text or email the results to his manager. If he didn't take the test he'd have to use his vacation time. Also they had a cleaning crew there the next day and were closed for a few hours in the morning.
The other stores no idea what they do.

Union Dude..still do not understand where this info is from. "Currently supported,?" Who wrote them? I am trying to clarify where you got this info. I know there are some federal rules but I believe they are for smaller companies. Where Covid is new I am trying to learn for myself and there is a lot of misinformation floating around..

Union guy here, My info comes from the Covid rules that are currently supported by these stores- Walmart, Target , Costco, BJ's wholesale, Sams Club, Home Depot, Lowes & Best Buy. What I outlined is their basic Covid rules some have more steps they take - like employees need to take temperature checks, random covid testing or if employee knows they came in contact with someone who had covid they pay for the employees test.

And thanks to someone in management who came up with this wonderful idea taken from a financial update: "Black Friday is technically Friday, November 27, but Bed Bath & Beyond’s Black Friday event launches on Thanksgiving Day, November 26 and goes through Saturday, November 28, with extra savings off entire purchases of 20 percent online and 25 percent in-store." So if you stay home and order, you get 20% off but if you decide to shop at the store (and possibly give other people the virus OR get the virus from being out in a store), we will give you 25% off. Merry Christmas to All!!!

You can tell your coworkers. It is up to you if you want to share. Cases are supposed to be contact traced but I do not know much about how it. is done. Anyone who tests positive should ask your Drs office or clinic or testing site about the next steps as far as quarantining.

I know management cannot release information on COVID positive employees due to HIPPA regulations. But can you, as an employee, let other employees know you are out due to COVID? I have a few members of my store that I would want to know so they can take the necessary precautions like testing or isolation if they are a vulnerable individual. Quite frankly, should I get the virus, I will definitely be notifying my SM immediately. Then I will be texting my colleagues to let them know why I will be out. For example, maybe I recently ate lunch with one of my fellow employees. I think that person should know and then they can make an informed decision on what to do. Since I am making the effort to contact employees with this information, HIPPA should not come into play. I realize there is a difference in how the company handles your absence if you contacted the virus outside of work but I think your fellow employees have the right to know what is going on.

"they don't need to tell you?". They CANNOT TELL YOU! It is a privacy violation to give details about a co-workers health. The OP has not replied to give more information

Union post..where is your information from? I am not sure it is correct..

Managers are supposed to let employees know that they worked with someone or came in close contact with someone with Covid. They don't need to tell you who that employee is. But they do need to put all employees that worked with that person on paid quarantine for 14 days. Have a cleaning crew there that day and close the store and clean. They do not need to inform other coworkers that did not work with that employee.
Know your rights, this is where a union would help protect you from wrong information coming from your SM or ASM. Their concern is helping and saving money for BB&B - not helping you. Covid cases are spiking right now if this is how BB&B is handling Covid cases you can expect getting it and BB&B giving you the wrong info to protect themselves.

What does the SM say? Did you talk with them? How did the ASM lie to you.? More details..and no..do not tell other employees what you thinK might be true.

Also YOU should not be saying anything. You do realize you could get sued? I swear these Covid posts sound fishy. Then there is never follow up to what happened.

To OP..was there more to your post? First whoever told you is breaking privacy laws. If they say "someone' tested positive that's okay..if they say " John Smith " tested positive that is NOT okay. What sort of a manager tells an employee another employee tested at all? How do you know they are telling the truth? Why won't they take action?

Do you know for sure that your ASM lied? And do you know 100percent the information is true? Your city and state(where the store is located) have boards of health. You can also report it to the Mayor's office or whatever office governs the city/town.
