Thread regarding Barnes & Noble layoffs

The newness wears off

I’ve been at B&N a little under a year and I have to admit, I see what everyone is talking about on this board. I hate that we don’t have enough people to work the floors. I hate that getting my SM to engage in any questions I have is fruitless. I hate that my store looks like it’s in constant disarray and the hours are peanuts. I regret working here and am looking for anything to replace this messed up company that I work for. Man, what a waste of a year.

I wasted 9 years there. It was not completely fruitless. It helped with with my self confidence in how to deal with people, and the discounts were nice. But that's it. The store was a constant mess. We never had enough bags in the winter due to them cutting everything before the new fiscal year starts in May. It was so embarrassing to keep telling customers "they're on order" when we both knew they weren't.

2 cashiers during busy times and managers refusing to help out. Putting people where they didn't belong. Having to twist arms to get a day off. You basically are there for Barnes and Noble and they do not care about your life outside of there. And, of course, the terrible pay. The constant pushing of the membership, which is a joke.

You're lucky you have this site to warn you. Years ago, you'd have no way of knowing what a terrible place a company was. Good luck finding some place decent!

You should feel better that you realized this so quickly. Imagine the people/s—ers who can't find new jobs that pay more or even the same. They're pretty much stuck in this pathetic company until they do.
