I’ve got a year left of college and Belk works for my schedule, but once I’m done with school I’ll be using my degree to find something better. I am curious why others choose to stay, especially knowing the company cares so little about their employees. Most at my location say they are there for the paycheck, but if we’re being honest - the pay really isn’t that great compared to industry standards. So other than a paycheck what other reasons are there to stay?

I quit, I am 50, I just have to believe I can find something. It might take out of the box thinking, maybe something way outside of retail, but I just can't deal with how my store and my store manager and immediate supervisor treated me. Nothing illegal or in violation of company rules, but just a really toxic work environment with no appreciation for years of service, no thought given to how stripping away benefits would be a hardship, no desire for us to have anything approaching a work/life balance, and destroying any joy the job had. I used to look to my boss, not this one, enjoy working with coworkers, take pride in my job, felt what I did mattered, but the last several years they squeezed even the tiniest amounts of joy and pride in my job to get every last cent out of me while I k–l myself with worsening arthritis.
I bailed. I will figure it out. I can't stay at Belk, certainly not at that store with those people, not during a pandemic.
Maybe some people don't live in an area with other job opportunities. Small towns have been wiped out of jobs in the past years. Also you will see when you get to be around 45 to 50 you are no longer a desirable employee. All because of age.
Honestly, I stay because on some level I enjoy my job, it's close to home, I like many of my co-workers, and I haven't been able to even get an interview anywhere else. I'm in my 50s, so I have to be realistic about whether companies want to hire someone my age. I'm not saying I'll go down with the ship, but I can't force another company to hire me. I couldnt even get an interview with Target.
