Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Why do so many people at Cisco have expensive Macs? Why not just use a Dell and save a few bucks?

Everyone wants an expensive Mac?

Why not just use a Dell and Microsoft Teams, Office, Word, Excel?

Everyone wants an expensive Mac and then wants Microsoft Office installed anyway?

They end up paying both Apple and Microsoft anyway?

Why waste so much money?

Cisco and Apple had a lawsuit over Cisco IOS and apple iOS.

This lawsuit was settled out of court.

Wasn't it after the Apple/Cisco lawsuit settlement that all the Cisco employees started carrying around MacBooks?

"At real cloud companies, real cloud developers use MACS. It's just easier. This thread illustrates why Cisco will never be a successful cloud company."

I agree that Cisco is not a successful cloud company, in my opinion.

But real companies actually know that cloud was designed to be able to run on a browser. And Firefox or Chrome run on any platform. That is Windows or Mac.

Let's say that you work at Fries Electronics as an example. You cannot tell a customer that wants to purchase a new computer that Firefox or Chrome is easier on one platform or another. That is clearly not true.

Besides, Cisco always used to say they are technology agnostic. Both are equally easy to use. It really is your preference whether you prefer one or the other.

just my 2 cents

AMazon is a cloud company. Cisco does not have cloud.

Cisco employees walking around looking like they run cloud on their macs, but doing nothing?

So, Cisco employees have Apple iCloud, but Cisco has no cloud. Hilarious. This should be WSJ!

This company overspending and delivers zipt ?

Look away!

"Years ago before Cisco IT controlled macs, they put so much c-ap on the windows devices it could take up to 20min to boot up...so, many of us spent our own money for macs so we could actually get work done..."

IT puts c-ap on ALL the laptops now.

As best practice. Instead of running applications on your Macintosh, you should instead request a CEL instance from your lab manager. Production apps should NOT be installed on Cisco employee's laptops. This same applies in ANY company.

A CentOS Linux. CentOS image download is free. You can also request other Linux flavor. Cisco lab manager will install this for you on a Cisco managed server.

Please do NOT run Cisco production services on your Macintosh laptop.

If you prefer Linux, you can always get a Lab PC/Laptop and install Linux directly on the laptop.
There is no justification for Mac, when the requirement is for CentOS, RedHat, Ubuntu, Debian, etc.

Further, please do not write that you need a Macintosh to run Linux applications, in the justification field, for further purchases.

"Mac's are Linux based. This makes MACs much better for using Linux tools for cloud development. Container development and orchestrations work better on MACSs."

Ahem!

Cisco bought Tail-F for orchestration. Cisco orchestration is not recommended to run on a MacBook.

  1. ) For orchestration development, best to use the server.
  2. ) Use the computer/laptop with an Integrated Development Environment.
  3. ) Git push the changes to the server.

If you run all Cisco's containers and orchestration and Cisco business on your Apple MacBook, then no wonder Cisco Software does not work. When you shut down your Apple and go home, Cisco would shut down too. You should follow best practice and ask your manager, if you need help on where to execute Cisco containers and orchestration. It should not be running on your laptop.

Bad practice Cisco !!

As a Manager, have to spend more on mac laptops, for the upfront cost.

And we have to pay IT more money per month for each employee that has mac laptop.

Microsoft now comes with a Linux based Sub-shell. Microsoft is not Linux based. But Microsoft now has a Linux shell available. The Linux sub-shell can be run from a Microsoft command line in Windows 10 and later.

If a laptop (not Apple) has an issue, it can be fixed in house by IT team. If memory fails it can be replaced in house.

In contrast, most MacBooks have memory hard soldered onto the motherboard, so the laptop has to go back to Apple for repair.

Apple used to be a lot better when Steve Jobs was still there.

My son wanted a MacBook and it costs $3000 dollars. Plus Microsoft Office, Microsoft this and that (he wanted something called VMWare Fusion to run Microsoft) and all the Microsoft suite of software. Basically he wanted me to spend another $1000 dollars.

I said: $4000 dollars for what?

I went to Cosco and for less than $1000 dollars we found a laptop and it had Microsoft Windows and Intel.

I told him when you graduate from college you can choose to pay for times the cost for YOUR own laptop.

No friggin way I'm going to fork over four times the cost !

Never leave money on the table.

I was at Cisco when Apple computers started to be a "thing". It started with higher level engineers and architects, who considered it "cool" to have a Mac, but also enjoyed Unix-type operating systems. It also started in Silicon Valley first (of course....lots of engineers with influence from Apple). Many bought them on their own, or managed to get their mgr/Dir to approve one which wasn't easy unless you were a "Cisco rock star", but then they were on their own regarding SW and integration with other Cisco tools (which didn't work well, or at all, on Macs at the time). You had to run bootcamp or other dual boot solution to run the Windows apps necessary to do your job.
Eventually Cisco IT approved use of Macs, and it just took off from there. If you wanted to be a cool Cisco architect kiddie, you got a Mac. I never did, since there was no advantage to having one, other than you like it and the Mac OS over a Windows computer. And like the original poster stated, Macs were at least 2x the cost of a comparable Windows machine.

Full disclosure: I have owned Macs....nice machines, but there are plenty of equal Windows machines.

This might sound crazy but most tools ( in most of the smarter business) are all available via the web, or the cloud.

Messages apps (like Cisco Jabber, IM, WebEx, etc) are all available through a web browser, on ANY computer.

Tools like Microsoft Charts, Spreadsheet, and Power Share Slides are all available throughout the cloud on any computer.

For purchasing, iProcure is again, available via a web browser on any computer.

For managing, and performing, again it’s all available via the World Wide Web.

For development, again, GitHub, Agile/Rally, bug tracking, is all available on any computer.

And if anything is lacking most companies offer ssh or Remote Desktop to develop servers.

The reason other companies invested in HTML/CSS/JS/React/Angular/Ajax/etc/etc/etc.

All these technologies can be executed via Chrome, IE, Firefox, Opera, Safari, etc.

Welcome to the 21’st century.

We have Cloud.

Come to the dark side.

This might sound crazy. I actually spend more hours working on an Apple Computer.

iMessage integration makes work a bit more bearable.
