Thread regarding Hitachi Vantara layoffs

Brad Surak tanked Hitachi Vantara and Lumada

The final chapter in Hitachi Data Systems is now finished.

Brad Surak, Brian Householder and Scott Kelly were the architects of the implosion of a once great company. All are gone now as are the many people they directly laid to waste in their disastrous efforts to transform the company. Brad Surak stands out though because it was his incompetence and misrepresentations that led to the layoffs of so many people as a veil to his own weakness. He charmed Japan until they finally had enough and there was no one left to blame. So many people have been directly impacted by his actions that it feels almost criminal.

I was here from the beginning when HDS was owned 80% by Hitachi Ltd. and 20% by EDS (Ross Perot’s old company). There was structure. There was direction. There was leadership which was mainly from the EDS side of the house. We knew the customers and what their needs were. It was a great marriage and we made a lot of money unlike what we see today. We couldn’t sell lemonade in the middle of the desert.

When Hitachi Data Systems became Hitachi Vantara, this was the beginning of the end.

Jack Domme - 2010
Ryuichi Otsuki - 2016
Brian Householder - 2018
Toshiaki Tokunaga - 2019
Gajen Kandiah - 2020

CEO Timeline. I dont think anyone remembers Ryuichi san who in my opinion accelerated the downward spiral left behind by Jack Domme.

The playbook of the Japanese is to bring the experts in. Brad was supposed to transition the company to IOT and software. He failed miserably. He is out. Now they bring in the Cognizant mafia and I am not sure what they will transition the company into. The cycle of failure continues....

I agree with you pointing out "the judgement of the Japanese". They clearly don't understand the industry or how to choose competent management.

I can also tell you that in my dozen years there, it was quite obvious that the engineering arm in Japan and that I worked with were, for a lack of a better term, "behind" technologically. The software they developed and there approach was embarrassing on many levels.

While Brad is certainly highly incompetent and full of bs, it is also a reflection on the judgement of the Japanese, or the lack of.
