Is it part of the leadership playbook to tell you that even though you weren’t picked, you were on the short list - as a way to placate you?

It's not bad being on the short list, it means you were close but beat out by someone clearly more qualified. It gives hope for next time.
If you were not on the shortlist, it suggests you may have applied for the wrong job. Oops.
You were on the short list but you, the D&I thing....(loser).
@xpx, My boss didn’t sugar coat anything with me. He gave me the honest truth with salt and vinegar. I didn’t appreciate that at the moment he told me. He allowed me to go home early that afternoon. After two scotches and a beer chaser, I came to let it go and gladly accept my exit from the company after 29 years. It’s a soothing feeling to know that retirement is finally here. I’ll be getting my one-year severance check, 6 months of unemployment benefits, my subsidized COBRA insurance and contemplating my $3.8MM ESIP and Lump Sum cash haul.
This was a really good time to get off the gravy train. However got put into at a lower psg job. I am happy that I was, but won't be too worried if I am gone the next time around. I don't worry if I am on the short list or not, care less about what the boss thinks of my worth is. Chevron is not a charity and the boss is not my parent. Here to earn money, invest and become financially independent.
For folks who are still in, you should look at your finances and healthcare seriously and get ready for the axe to fall next year. The next time though, there won't be a covid package offered.
Yes....a manager told 6 people I know that they were on the short list or highly competitive for same position. This is how cowards let you down easy and (for all of them that still work here) get keep them mildly motivated. Meanwhile, I was told I didn't get selected in R3 because they rescued someone.
Just strap yourself in. Another 5-10% next year with many fewer EOIs.
Yes. Every time I did not get an expected raise I was always “so close” as described by my ex-boss. Does no matter why, but folks feel bad and want to sugar coat it as best they can ... is that bad? Sorry, but move on.
No, there were short lists for every position. The position owner's choice prevailed. What is the point of lying?
That’s just a management lie...
No.
No reason to!
no, they were not even supposed to tell you if you were or weren't shortlisted for a job.
