Getting “put out of service”

Hey guys I’m interested in the railroad. Have been doing some research....Was curious to what “getting put out of service” looks like. Do the Trainmaster drill you on what happened or do you just kinda get told to go home. Is there like a formal statement given? If it has to go all the way to an investigation how does that all work? Is it like a trial?

I appreciate any input.

When you get in trouble, most of the time you are simply asked who your local chairman is- they don’t even tell you you are getting handled for discipline until later after you’ve gone home. This is because they are cowards. Then you get a call from your local union guy tell you that you are getting a START serious with deferred time. They don’t want anyone making a scene at work so it’s like the whole Friday firing tactic. If you try to stay off the radar and don’t let them know who you are it helps. Once they put a name to a face it can make it much harder. Some guys do it to themselves starting arguments with Trainmasters. Which can go either of 2 ways but why open yourself up to begin with?

If you want a job where your having to look over your shoulder every second in fear of being taken out of service or fired, give up any idea of a famly life, your friends, goodby to weekends or any set schedule for that matter then sign on up! Take what we are telling you seriously. If I didnt have 17 years in id be looking elsewhere. It is a very toxic enviroment especially now.

Don’t join NS. You’ll have no life and be miserable.

If this post is serious , Don’t be looking at NS for a job . They look at you on day 1 for reasons to fire you for any bs reason . Look else where unless you are looking for a very short career .

This is one of the only places you can actually talk to railroaders. Most other forums or even reddit aren’t active

Can you think of any occupation where a large number of workers, especially in transportation, carry an insurance policy that covers lost wages due to being pulled out of service/fired? Most people outside the railroad industry can't even fathom that a policy could exist like this, and can't believe that a person would need it. And you're interested in the railroad???

Only industry I've ever seen where once your hired, every day after that they're trying to fire you. The culture is toxic. It is not the place to do a career.
