Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

GM to lay-off in 2021

It’s an open secret, coronavirus lay-off to hit GM in 2021. People who have sniffed it are leaving already. Every week, I hear of a couple departures from the company. BTW Dhivya did not resign, and I will leave it at that. Talk to any treasury person, they know! Leave the company now when there are fewer people looking for jobs or just wait and you’ll struggle to get your next job! Clean up your resume today and bolt!

$58.87/share and minimal DOH of inventory.... looks like the Covid 19 benefited them and many other large manufacturing companies.... But investors love you, and your plugging along so far so good.... But, this electrical infrastructure you seem to be wanting to rely on by 2035 to run your sold EV's really needs to be modified, and go Nuclear quickly if you hope to be able to make them look more attractive to the masses. Just Purchase DTE and CP in Michigan and speed up this process, or just wait and let the tax payers pay for it.... ya, that's the ticket....

It's always laughable reading a post like this after s—ing all the money out of a company with a pension and saying "I should of left 10 years sooner".

"There is Life After GM - and it is AWESOME! I left/retired 1.5 years ago after 35 years at GM.
What did I find? Better pay, better benefits, better bonus and a MUCH better Culture!
Yes, I changed industries. Relocated. Learning every day.
My only wish is that I had left GM 10 years sooner.
If you aren’t happy at GM, don’t stay around for any longer than absolutely necessary.
Life is too precious to waste!
BTW, informal survey of 100+ of my colleagues surrounding Electric Vehicles; not a single person expressed ANY interest in ANY GM EV. Very high interest in Tesla, Rivian, etc. "

I jumped to Microsoft. Working there while on my leave! I will resign after collecting my bonus next year. GM is an abysmally r—ded company!

I resigned last week. I was on leave for 2 months and found myself a good position while on leave. GM is a Sh1th0le. Quit them!

Just reading through messages here gives me headaches, lots of spelling errors and whining. Some dude/gal posted a similar message when COVID hit in March. If you are so bitter then just leave, I joined GM last year after spending 7 years on a different industry. I can tell you right away that GM is not the best and my manager is not the best either but there are worse things out there. Considering that the tight labor market disappeared with COVID meaning companies are not hiring like crazy nor giving juicy offers trying to convince you to join them, please be very careful about doing drastic moves. If you are so unhappy here at GM and have 6-12 months of expenses saved up, maybe you can afford to quit and wait until an offer shows up.

So for those hired prior to the pension freeze, I want to say around 1994, how many will bolt once they have there 30 years and health care? It's gotta be 60% or more that are in that boat.

Counting down the days as you've worked there for 29 years right before management finds a way to fire you and give you your pension but no health care. That 30 and down deal must have been one hell of a deal.

Looks like this thread is sponsored by GM HR, trying to convince people to leave based on rumors, saving them efforts to do the actual downsizing.

Don’t leave unless you know for sure the reality within your department. The world out there ain’t any better, at least in Michigan.

Paul Jacobson just named as Dhivya's replacement...

He's from Delta. So expect that as a cost-cutting measure the professional work spaces will be reduced to the size of a high school language lab study carrel, with 6-inch LCD monitor, cheap headphones, and everyone will sit shoulder to shoulder.

Paul Jacobson just named as Dhivya's replacement - well - who else will join GM - other than from airline industry which is in a permanent hole for 10 more years!
Nest up - Ax will fall - GET OUT FOLKS!

what were reasons for asking Dhivya to leave then ? was she caught taking part in illegal activity or she treated people like c-ap or completely failed at the job?

what a privilege corporate executives have in america that their "firing" simply means asking them to find a job somewhere else and then announcing that person is "Leaving". The actual workers of a company can be fired and escorted out same day.

I currently buy GM cars and have been for a while, however, once I resign (and after my taste of GM culture), I will stop buying GM vehicles. They are a POS just like GM Management!

I really wonder how many people would willingly buy GM cars without working for GM. After all the lay-off debacles, GM has k–led whatever loyalty and pride there once was.

GM culture has been on the decline for a while now. All good leaders have left, those left are the bottom of the pack that no other company wants. Management is detestable! The company is horrible for women, you have to be a while make to move up. LEAVE NOW!

An option other than leaving would be to wait for a layoff pkg with parting pay and unemployment. And most likely when regime change takes place, that overdue pandemic unemployment boost will be restored (US only).

They want you to quit before they do the cut – no severance, no unemployment. It's a cold hard calculation.

If it were me with no dependents or big debts, I would plot out some new training to do once the ax falls. Most likely it will be like the last purge 18 months ago – culling based on age, salary and especially health insurance risk, and you can bet the lists were created months ago.

Presumably all here are professionals astute enough to have 3-6 months living expenses on hand.

I heard if this last week as well! Scary stuff. I have started interviewing as well. Been with the company for 8 years now, and it seems like bankruptcy will hit GM all over.

This is big news. Confirms what I have heard and observe. Marry Barra is clueless at running the company. GM signed the nikola deal and caught themselves with their pants down. How dumb can they get. This company is f—ng dumb!!!
