Thread regarding Pratt and Whitney layoffs

TODAY was supposed to be the big day - Any Evidence of Layoffs?

I was told about a month ago that 9/18/20 was supposed to be the big day for layoffs, at least for the P&W Columbus site.

Does anyone have first hand accounts of anyone actually being let go today?
If so, please include # of people, their department, & the P&W location it occurred at.

(P&W is so large, it's helpful to know WHERE cuts are happening to better predict if this is a 1-day event across the entire company or more of a rolling wave of cuts spanning the value stream and occurring at various dates)

Confirmed. No walkouts occurred on the Columbus Forge - Blades side either.

I agree. Still a good idea to have a backup just in case it happens over the next 2 weeks.

Looks like no one got walked out today at Columbus Forge. So, we're all left wondering what's happening and when. My advice to everyone is to get a backup plan squared away.

They’re not enlarging the pool. Upper leaders have known it would be 15k since August. They’re not announced to the VPs that quickly, that and the presidents are in contact with Greg Hayes constantly. The original numbers from late August early sept still stand

The initial number of 8K heads, total affected divisions, was almost doubled to 15K. Divisional leadership is scrambling for the next few days to enlarge the layoff pool. I think the layoff would happen in one round per group, not a few released and then 3weeks latter a few more from the same group. Layoffs will happen corporate announce it to the business world at large, maybe not to its' divisional executives until after the fact.

It's a done deal, if you (fill in the name) are on the list it's gonna happen. On a Friday or the following Monday it doesn't matter. I'd hold off on vacation day(s) if you get laid off you have plenty of vacation and the $ in lieu of time off is a more beneficial condition.

I personally think the larger number was brewing, but not flowed down. The need to show strong direction / leadership / cost control cause the latest layoff number to be released into the world, without acknowledgement by divisional presidents. It's the number RTX must show to the markets in order to maintain its' valuation.

The info came from a middle manager I trust from what he learned from a P&W Connecticut executive about a month ago.

Common business wisdom states that the best time to lay people off is on a Friday, and doing so before the end of the Q3 fiscal quarter (Q3 ends Sept 30th) makes sense to me.

Furloughs are no longer occurring (at least at our site), we are doing meeting-free Fridays, but what better way to avoid confrontation than to inform people they are laid off while they are on vacation or working remote? Just my thinking.

But glad to hear your site hasn't had any cuts yet either.

How reliable was this source? I haven’t seen any personally and I’m not sure why Pratt would lay people off of a Friday when many military engines people are still furloughed on alternating Fridays. In addition, my department is encouraging meeting free Fridays and for people to take vacation on Fridays so there probably won’t be many people around to get in contact with to lay off.
