Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

Will they take away my unemployment for job refusal?

I was laid off in June. I was just contacted asking if I would be interested in taking a part time position in another store. If I say no because of the following reasons, does this qualify as job refusal and can my benefits be cut off?

The store they want me to go to is much further than the one I worked in before.

They want to pay me less.

They are only open from 11-7 where I am now which doesn’t work for me. I was a part time employee and I only worked nights and weekends which would have to stay the same (I don’t have childcare).

No you would not lose your unemployment if you refused to take a job in a different store that is out of the area for you.

"I'm sure they didn't think anyone would up-and-quit when no one else is hiring."

Ain't that the truth! Have you seen the number of OVM jobs that are open right now? All those people QUIT after only a few weeks because they hate the job! I bet Macy's didn't expect that at. all.

I think most states' unemployment laws would permit you the right to refuse an offer from the company who laid you off and ask you to return at a lower salary & a longer commute.

It was pretty easy to predict that Macy's would try to make a buck off of people who they laid off. I don't think they anticipated losing a lot of their help, because people with expiring work visas are now being forced to return to their countries. (This is worse in some states, like NY and CA than in others.) And, I'm sure they didn't think anyone would up-and-quit when no one else is hiring.

I just don't plan on letting them make an offer in the first place. I've blocked the numbers of Macy's managers on my cell and screen my calls. I have no reason anymore to return their calls—such a good feeling.

Don’t accept that offer. That is ridiculous of them to even make that offer. You are totally in the right to not accept and keep your unemployment until something else comes along.

I agree with everyone here – don't come back to Macy's, especially for PT work at a lower rate that's further away. That's f*cking insulting and proof that they cannot fill positions cause no one wants to work there. They must think you are stupid or desperate.

Don't say anything to your unemployment office (even if they knew, I'm pretty sure your refusal to accept the job is valid). Macy's won't contact them.

Everyone at my store is pretty miserable right now and I hear it's pretty universal across the company. Macy's is a total dumpster fire but that's another topic for another thread ¯_(ツ)_/¯

No. You can refuse jobs at don’t forget your needs. Just answer unemployment questions the same each week. Macy’s will not contact unemployment for this.

Oh great. I didn’t know I’d have to return part of severance too. Yet another reason why I don’t want to have to go back.

You could report that you did refuse an offer, and then see if they want to know why. You have valid reasons not to accept the position. You could also say you did not refuse a job. No one will none the wiser. Remember too that going back to work for M will result in having to return part of your severance money if you got some.
