Thread regarding Bed Bath & Beyond layoffs

Advice from an ex employee

Cutting hours, forcing long tenured people to part time? Yeah, I saw this begin its roots almost 2 years ago.

I saw this happen moreso in lower volume stores (d and c), where the ONLY full time worker in the whole store is the SM. They started implementing this a year and a half ago, and I quit a little over a year ago. For reference I was with the company fo 6 years before I left.

When I moved, I went from an A volume to a D volume store. I was a top performing ASM and I wanted to step down to supervisor in my A volume store (because of childcare issues), so they let me. But when I moved, the area I moved to ONLY had d and c volume stores within an hour radius. The only position they had open was for part time supervisor with keys.

I went from making 65k a year to making 19 dollars an hour as a part time OPS manager with keys. I ended up quitting after just a few weeks at my D volume store where the SM was an ex DISTRICT manager.

I knew this practice was going to happen to bigger volume stores eventually, the way things were going with upper management and the way things were trending with this company. It got so pathetic to be honest. I knew i had to leave.

My childcare situation improved when I moved, and I ended up landing a job at Target making 75k a year. Now, I'm finishing up school and plan to be an accountant by the end of next spring semester, where I plan to land a job that pays over 100k a year (I have connections in the accounting industry).

For the people out there with all this retail experience.... go apply to Target! They are doing so well right now. Or, apply to Home Depot! Check out their stocks, it makes BBB look so sad.

I really loved this company before things started to REALLY fall apart. It hurts my heart, because it could have been so great. Unfortunately, its leaders ran it to the ground and they keep doing things that only makes things worse. I'm sorry for those of you who feel like its your only option for work. Dollar Tree will pay you more money and will actually give you full time status. Shoot, go apply to McDonald's. Anything is better than BBB!

Believe it or not, some people are good networking and make connections. You can even get on linkedin and make connections. I see some people just don't think that they can actively have some control over what happens in their professional lives.
