Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

To Everyone Worrying

From someone (old-timer) who has been through the LR cycle...

  1. Don't worry. You will emerge from the other side. Most likely happier.
  1. Try to turn your brain off and sharpen your skills. Always. If technical, make sure you are up to date.
  1. Lower your post LR expectations. Lots of good fulfilling jobs out there. They might not pay as well as Cisco.
  1. You were smart enough to get here and there isn't a dang thing you can do about ER and LR. It is just business.
  1. It might be one of the best journeys in your life. Enjoy the long strange LR trip. You will do fine.

I would submit csco is going the way of 3com, they have passed hp at this point. Also, it was the best place to work, bar none, 15-20 years ago. Now it's a machine that stocks it's new leadership with failures from other companies - salesforce, juniper, etc.

Yes, you will get through. However, you are being laid off in the worst economy we have seen. Recovery is going to be much longer than before because the money printers are all that is keeping the economy afloat. All I can say is to stay strong, network, volunteer, educate, gain critical skills, and do whatever it takes to get in a door now. It is going to take a lot of burying pride and accepting what is available versus what once was.

1) Cisco restructures every quarter, and your job is only safe until next quarter.
2) Cisco is showing the beginnings of Lucent. Lucent was a $300B company that lost most of its value, and finally merged with Alcatel at around $2B. Lucent had some of the best people in the universe, but still it did not survive
3) I really feel people who are leaving the company will do much better in the long run.
4)Lot of good companies that will hire ex-Cisco people, but don't wait too long.
