Remind yourself there will be a silver lining regardless of the outcome. If you’re laid off, no more CVX BS to put up with and more time to enjoy other things (like astronomy), albeit without a regular paycheck. If you keep your job, you’ve got an income at (least until the next re-org).

Focus on the good in your life. Be thankful to God for your blessings.

Take up astronomy. This brings on a new level of stress and frustration but it is fun to learn and you won’t miss the next comet that comes around in 7,000 years. You can also impress people when you talk about the universe even with only a little knowledge most people don’t have. You’ll force yourself to learn more and find darker skies away from home which brings on more fulfillment and relaxation just from being outdoors more. You’ll begin to think of the world in ways you never did before, ask yourself questions and challenge your own assumptions that you’ve held onto for so long. You’ll also start to realize how insignificant all the BS in the world right now is compared to the eternal vastness that is the universe. And make love to your SO, a lot.

Making love to my wife in the bedroom, kitchen and shower everyday. Company phone on mute, let it rollover to voicemail. I’ll call you back when I can. No more stress.

Be kind to yourself. This is out of our control. There is always something else out there even if the worst happens.

Go where your heart takes you and not with the money. You may be poorer in the end but you will be happier unless you always second guess your decisions.

You are not alone. BP, ExxonMobil, Shell, Oxy, Chesapeake, Apache, Schlumberger, Halliburton and others are collectively cutting tens of thousands of jobs, not VH to mention other industries. This damn Covid situation is putting people in an impossible position. Seriously, consider a new career path. Stay calm and keep rational. Go to your church and speak to your pastor, priest or whomever. Now is the time to keep a level head. You may end up keeping your job.

Start working on removing the importance you put on your role as a Chevron employee. Depending on your personality and how long you’ve been working it takes some time to minimize that part of your identity and you may need to do it again next round of cuts. It’s not always easy since we spend so much of our waking hours working but it’s the only way to mentally survive looking down the barrel of the lay-off cannon.

Put in extra hours on company projects. There is no weekend anymore and the commute time is zero. Figure on working about 16 hours a day ( 6 hours of sleep and 2 hours for meals and family time). Workaholics dream come true!

Spend time on hobbies, self improvement, do it yourself projects, learning new skills, and improving relationships with friends and family. Also a lot of Netflix.
