If you have money on your commuter card, you better go take it now. I was laid off in February and haven't been on the train in months. I went to use the card and it had zero balance. I was told the money was returned to Macy's. Macy's told me they had to return the money to the government. They basically hijacked my money. Macy's screwed me once again.

Thanks for clarifying. I wasn’t familiar with this benefit and poster states he/she was told the money was “returned to Macy’s” hence me wondering if poster contributed. Now i understand. Thanks.
They don't pay anything for commuting. Commuter benefits means they take some of your salary pre-tax and put it toward your commuting costs. Ie a preloaded Metrocard. You just avoid paying some taxes.
What kind of commuter benefits does Macy's offer? I always tried to find info on this but never did (I live in and work in NJ and always wondered if they would contribute to a NJ Transit commute should I ever work at Herald Square).
Yes, that person did contribute the money. The issue is that the contribution is pre-tax, so there's no uncomplicated way to refund the money. Instead, the employee has to forfeit what's unspent. My packet spelled this out, but the ramifications are easy to miss, since the text doesn't explicitly say "you snooze you lose."

There was information in your FAQ packet for the February layoffs that addressed commuter benefits. You need to go back and read that to see what happened to that money
