Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Protecting management

It doesn’t matter how much work you put in, how many hours you’ve clocked - unless you’re middle management or higher your position in the company isn’t safe. GM has proven time and again that their main priority has been and always will be their ‘star’ management team. To reduce bloating they’d rather get rid of those who bring results than see one of their precious own get cut.

My experience at GM was actually really good, I had 20 years contract with the company. My job was given to the uaw unfortunately, I was at GPS Pontiac.
It's interesting given today's current situation with Wuhan virus, meaning, GM closed GPS a relatively new facility to move people to Warren, now both facilities are ghost towns. GM could be a #1 company if they stopped moving people and wasting time and money all the time, place focus on the product instead. Allow the engineering teams to do the job they labored in college to do, I was in competitive benchmarking and my team was top notch, some of the finest people I've had the pleasure to work with, I miss them as those were the best years for me at GM, my managers included. GM needs that focus back and passion for the product, I was always excited to go in to work because it never felt like a job to me. I miss GPS, damn.
I hope all of you keep safe and take care, the holiday season is coming, peace to all of you.🙏

Some things never change. I left GM a while ago but had been on the manufacturing side for 20 years. I personally saw how the upper and middle management circled the wagons during 2008 and as a result had very few management layoffs compared to the engineering ranks. It was sad to see the bloated middle management emerge unscathed when they should have been the ones who were cut the most. I am not saying all the managers were bad, some of the best managers I worked for in my career were GM managers. However I think most are terrible and in truth they are the ones holding the good managers back.

It sure is curious how some middle management continues to treat people with disrespect - usual conversations conducted by demeaning comments ad shouting. Poor 360 results to these managers does not produce any actions either, even if this feedback repeats year after year.
