Thread regarding National Oilwell Varco Inc. layoffs

Conroe Brandt, What have you done for us lately?

So I am close to accepting a new position outside of O&G and away from NOV and wanted to express the emails we have received from our leadership. He wants to know what we have done for him lately... what have you done for us at any given time? What do you do for NOV and what are you offering us for the future? The way we see it is yes we made the cut but what happens after we get over 40 years old? We have seen what you have done with the ones that were over 40 earlier this year... is this what awaits us as well. No thank you, we will move on to something better. You are not liked or respected by anyone within this organization and doubt outside as well. We will continue to do as little as possible, we will continue to take advantage of the work from home order. We no longer fear for our jobs as this is no longer a place worth working at. You were better off keeping the old timers as they would have stayed no matter what you did to them. So ask yourself "what have you done" ...NOTHING GOOD!!! So stop sending the scare tactics emails as none of us are scared or care... This is a job and no longer a career for any of us so do your worst or not as we just do not care anymore.

It’s another report they’ll read for a few weeks and then they’ll slowly stop. What the heck is the point of it if we have this CRM system that we did all the training on? When that was first rolled out everyone had to take training. People were looking at it and asking what the updates were on things. When are we closing some deal we put into it? If they had just stayed CONSISTENT about updating CRM they wouldn’t have needed this. You’d have notes attached to an account that you can check up on even months later. Get a detailed history of what happened with whom and by who. Now it’s just some report that will be forgotten a few days after it’s read. If it’s even read at all. This indicates a leadership team that has really lost touch with its people and its business. They’re trying to figure out a way to manage things without having to work too hard. Even scanning through the CRM program to figure out what is going on in too much trouble. So instead they want it in a top three report so if someone asks them they can give out highlights and produce the image of a manager that is in touch with their company. That image could not be further from the truth. It’s all laziness compounded by greed. Just read the posts here. In leadership your subordinates are a direct reflection of their leadership. Many of the comments here say “do as little as possible (laziness) and make as much as you can (greed)”. Many are the same on other posts. This isn’t some kind of culture that was arrived at organically. It started at the top and then spread through the organization and now goes all the way down to the bottom. Laziness and greed are the culture here. It’s a toxic environment where business, profitability, ideas, motivation, etc will die. It can’t survive in that environment. It’s too toxic.

If WSS has any chance of survival it must change its culture. It’s obvious. The leadership sees it. They may paint a picture that is successful and a culture that fosters success. But deep down, they know. They know that the entire culture of the organization needs an overhaul if it has any chance of survivability, let alone success. We’re not talking about stupid people here. They got to where they are because they were smart and made good decisions. But they’ve fallen into the trap of wanting to try and get as much as they can for themselves while participating as little as possible. I’m sure they’ve lied to themselves along the way. Fooled themselves into saying it’s because they’re so busy, and too far spread out, and so on. But they put themselves into checkmate by hiring and promoting people that would do the job for less and in a worse environment. They wanted people to do the work for them but they needed to maximize their profitability and bonuses so they hired cheap. They hoped that these people would rise to the occasion. They even dangled the carrot of future reward. But it’s gotten too far now and people have figured out the game.

Change the culture or it will die. It’s that simple. WSS needs strong, dynamic leadership now more than ever.

WOW, this is still on the board! I would have thought that by now the little man would have contacted the attorneys and removed this. I bet he is so upset that he cannot wield the power he so desperately needs to make himself feel big and important. .. lol. I was laid off months ago and can tell you that I feel so relieved to be away from here. Financially it has been a hard road but I know that I will land something better with a company that values their employees unlike this place or like it has been for the last 5 years. I agree with an earlier post stating this place should or will close it doors if they cannot make equipment in house and have to outsource everything. What a sad place this has become... gone are the Christmas parties, cook outs, luncheons and company picnics that united the plant and made this a great place to be. I do feel lucky that I at least got to experience this prior to all the cut throat leadership that now only concerns themselves with what they can take from a once great place to work. The manufacturing boss is one of the laziest human beings I have ever dealt with. He is a lair and has no morals and should be ashamed of what he has become and what he has promoted in the shop. His predecessor would walk the shop every morning every day to say hello and stop by our "houses" to at least nod good morning. This one can barely walk to the bathroom 10' down the hall... such a sad example of leadership. So good luck to you that are left and stay strong knowing there will be other options soon for you that will make you feel valued. This is for you and your boss to ponder as you both are lacking the below skills

“The challenge of leadership is to be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant; have humor, but without folly.”

Get worst? Not sure that is possible since they lost most of the talent. There is no one there that has any real experience or has been tested when things get busy... but doubt it gets busy anytime soon. The shop manager is busy watching YOUTUBE and spitting in a cup waiting on the next threatening email his boss sends...he is the only one worried as the rest of us are just waiting for them to close the doors and lock the gates. If we cannot manufacture here in the US to secure contracts and have to outsource to other countries why even keep this place open? It would seem that maybe only a handful of ENG are needed to run the R&D side and then outsource everything else. All of us see the writing on the wall and know that this place is never going to be anything like it use to be. We or at least I am waiting on the economy to pick up to start looking for something else. This place kept the upper management intact and they are the problem...

You can expect things to get worse at Brandt with who they are going to be giving the new lead man position too. Dude is dumber than a box of rocks.

Bravo, well said. I was one of those old timers. Oh I had not been with NOV for decades. I was relatively new to the company. NOV is the worst company I've worked for in my entire life. Still, I was willing to put up with it because I just wanted to make it to full retirement age. But now I am unemployed and don't have a real good feeling about finding a job any time soon. So I'll exhaust my unemployment, take early retirement and go to handing out carts are Walmart. Hell of a way to end my career.

Why would anyone want to come to Brandt and actually work hard? The slackers are not punished and the high performers are not recognized. Both groups of employees are treated the same, so why bother with giving your best.

lol, this post has the management guessing who wrote it. They monitor this site closely and think it is just one person writing these... they believe that all in all we are happy here and they are doing a good job managing the business. If everyone answered the satisfaction poll honestly they would see the real numbers of how many hate being here and have no respect for any of the upper management at all ... especially at the top.... his own direct reports can not stand him and talk about him daily. I am fairly new here and know this is just a pit stop in my career as this is not where I plan on wasting a bunch of time at. I assume you do not expect any loyalty from your employees as you offer them none in return so no big surprise when we start leaving and you will be left with subpar people doing a mediocre job. Look up the meaning of insanity and this place should be an example.

Why is anybody surprised? You are talking about a place where a few years ago for thanksgiving lunch they gave us chili and crackers made by the guys in the shop.

@1gcx+16XTHvUm , i agree with you buddy. I'm not at Brandt but i am with Tuboscope and several if not all of us are doing the same thing you are. Top pay, no work though we do have to try and look busy from time to time. We work on personal projects, go on Facebook and Youtube all the time and we even roam around and talk to our buddies in other departments. We show up everyday and make a good paycheck. None of us are complaining about getting paid for doing nothing.

NOV Brandt is one of the best places I have worked. I get a weld bay in the corner and literally do nothing all day and get paid 24 an hour to look at memes and watch videos on my phone. The lead on up are clueless. Yes it’s a job and not a career but we gonna ride this wagon until the wheels fall

I’m one that had 25 years in and could do all the jobs. And they layed us off. There were some people that had 35 and one that had over 40 years. And yes it’s sad how that treated us. So if you have a change to get out do it. Because you did get old to.

I was in the over 40 and 20+ years of service when they laid me off as well. This place has gone down hill and is a shell of what it once was. The little man running things is one of the lowest life forms ever created. He openly stated in a managers meeting at the first of the year he did not feel any regret for anyone that was laid off... it made "everyone else more secure". He does not care that the 20+ years I put in here to secure a future is gone and now I am at an age that no one really wants to hire me. He does not care that I lost my health insurance at an age when it really matters. He does not care about any of it or any of you. I can only hope that some how some way karma comes into his life 10 fold. Yes this sounds petty but some people are just pure garbage and deserve what karma hands out... and he is one of them. Really there are a few of them like this in this management team that are this way.

Im actually in a dumb spot with that. I turned 39 this year and have close to 20yrs with NOV. I'd have given anything to have been offered the severance and get out of here with the over 40 club but I'm just stuck sending out resumes with everyone else these days struggling to leave the old fashioned way...

I hope all these guys that got severance know how lucky they are!

Was this Brandt leadersheep, or El Moustachio? If either needs to ask what their people are doing, they have NO BUSINESS running the company.
