For weeks it seems that as soon as those doors open our teams are hitting the ground running until end of shift. We are seriously understaffed and it seems to be the norm, which is sad. As soon as I am done with a task or assisting a customer I’m expected to be pulled in every direction. I know I’m getting paid to work here but this is ridiculous.

Ditto to everything said thus far. My store is definitely cutting hours even though our customer counts and sales are not subsiding. We have had an open rec for another full-time associate for my department for over 6 weeks (that remains unfilled) yet they have cut all my part-time associates to the bone during the same time period. It's crystal clear that all they care about is getting payroll down. Meanwhile we have customers constantly walking out because they got tired of waiting for the one and only associate scheduled to get to them. Yes and forget about attempting to call for help as everyone else is experiencing the same in their departments and management is buried as well. In my department just one lost sale can easily pay my wages for an entire week (if not more). It's the penny wise pound foolish corporate mantra that is tone deaf and apparently incapable of taking a macro view of the importance of the customer experience. Makes me want to hurl every time I have to hear the closing of one of Marvin's podcasts as we absolutely are nowhere close to being best in class and in my opinion are going backwards at a breakneck pace.
I close and started my shift mid afternoon and turns out I was the first person in the department all day. Lots to do also deal with customers wondering why doors locked and no cashier and they have to haul mulch, stone all the way to main registers. Found out today vacation, holiday paid out (hope that applies to PT), I had been waiting til I burned through most of it, but now will quit sooner.
I had only been their 5 min, and getting a mask, when hassled by SSA to see if I had done survey yet. I asked her about her hirin efforts to get more cashiers so I didn’t have to deal with what looks like a closed department. Would help if we’d stop firing people just cuz mgmt gets mad at them.
I finally quit because of the reasons you gave. I found out I was taking it out on the customers and my fellow workers. Mentally and physically I was exhausted. Then I got one of of those six days on and one day off schedules. SM pulled the stools out of my dept and I confronted SM about it she said we needed to be more active I handed her my vest and walked out the door. I am much happier now.
We have record number of Open Positions and our store seems to be going out of it's way to fire people that have been there awhile for the smallest things. It's really the SM targeting people. I know SM is comp'd on Sales, but I also wonder if the get comp'd on profitability. It makes NO sense how they are managing staff and with our c-appy SM we have a rep and hardly anyone applies anymore.
I take care of my department but trying not to get s—ed into handling everything else because mgmt won't do their job to hire and retain employees. I can't and won't any longer cover 3 depts and do code 50's and get the carts all the time. I'm going to hide my dept like I've seem most people do. IF only we had a restroom in our area, anything to not have to walk through store in a red vest.
