Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

LR Notifications Have Begun

I'm a blue badge in Salt Lake City. Was informed today that my position is in danger with the upcoming LR and I strongly start looking for another job inside or outside the company. I'm 44 years old. 12 with Cisco.

It still didn't help with the internal search.....most jobs had been frozen, or hiring managers were told to look outside (ie don't hire internally, even though there were plenty of good internal candidates).

And that's what pisses me off. Leadership claims that our jobs are "redundant" and that they don't want to let us go, but they have to and they hope we can find internal roles on other teams that have openings yet, but the reality is that they just want you gone so they can bring in younger, cheaper "talent".

Anyone who is stupid enough to take the "Stay Put & Look" for a new role option is extremely foolish. Historically, Cisco hasn't hired many people on the LR list after notification. The odds are stacked against you and you give up the better package by trying to dodge the bullet.

I know VERY few who managed to find new internal openings, but surprisingly I know a quite a lot that tried.

Welcome to age discrimination in the tech industry. It's good you were given some warning. I was given advance warning also, when I was LR'd a few years ago. It still didn't help with the internal search.....most jobs had been frozen, or hiring managers were told to look outside (ie don't hire internally, even though there were plenty of good internal candidates).

in india, you can be LR'ed at anytime for any reason, for example mgr can say: "today you did not polish your shoes, your job has been made redundant".

And that’s why hiring in California and Some of Europe is frowned upon

"And getting rid of people in France and Germany is ruinously expensive"

This is true. In Europe they require much more justification to let employees go. You can't just carelessly lay off people.

it’s a whole different model this year.

Yes, after I wrote that, I had the same thought. France and Germany will take ages, but many others could be faster. And getting rid of people in France and Germany is ruinously expensive

@1kpj - I wouldn’t be so sure. It’s not with the usual delay behind the US this year as they have preannounced it way ahead of time, which they don’t usually do. Germany and France may have to lag behind due to legislation, but most EU countries can now fit into Oct 7 timeline... it’s a whole different model this year.

I’m in Europe. We have months more to wait. Probably find out about the beginning of December. Merry Christmas. ☃️☃️

At least you were given an early heads up before Oct 7. Best of luck.

It is a tough moment when the cold hard reality of the situation finally hits home, and you realize you are impacted.
