Thread regarding Hitachi Vantara layoffs

Funeral march

Since GK has joined, its almost as if there is funeral music playing on loud through the company. Not the poor guys fault of course, its as if everyone is waiting to hear when they will be let go.

Hearing he made a good effort to calm the troops but they can see the writing on the wall. While they (his second and third lines) spend the next month or two falling all over themselves trying to show him their value, it is obvious that many have a foot out the door. From my conversations, they are putting on a smile because they need to but they are trying to figure out what he thinks of whom. Well surprise surprise, the ask given to Korn Ferry is wide. Hearing a couple more recruiter names now in the mix.

I would like to say I am sorry for what they are going through, I know and like these people but they are and have been terrible leaders. So not really sorry to see them go.

Asia VP s—s? Expect him to get a promotion. Oh an wit that, expect some major layoffs. After all Mr. GK wants everything self funded.

We can all expect what will happen next. This is a cluster of a great magnitude. Do the people in the parent company even care?

Ok. So. I have had a few convos with the new guys. What I was able to make out is GK and these folks are having their own private convos on what they need to do with no one, repeat no one from the existing team to validate their navel gazing. Even if they think that the old folks are useless, that is a dangerous thing to do. These folks dont know products or have a products background. They are charting a path without any basis in fact or reality. Unless they intend to make this into a fully services based shop, we are in real trouble here.

The Funeral Music is because there are lay offs coming, if people can't see this is happening across the organization then they are not looking at the business. They will be deep and cut hard so they can make the numbers look good and hide behind any lack of innovation and customer focus.

This seems to be the management style required to stay employed when all the good people are leaving because of bad management and vision . Sydney for example, its just a gig for the boys headed up by the local VP and the pre sales Director - both are causing so much damage internally as well with our customers - Champions in their own minds - Wake up ASIA VP and see what's happening before its too late ...

Even the minions know the show is over. All the talent is walking away because they can see the writing on the wall. Nepotism always does in a company. HV is toast. Anyone that values their career should leave. Don't walk, run.

Honestly, no one cares about his friends bank accounts. If they get rich, good for them. What we want is that it is not on the backs of the people who are working their behinds off here. GK needs to fix the comp structure. My team has not had a decent pay raise for a while now. We are not mercenaries but at some point, we will break as well if he cant figure out a path towards hope for us.

GK - no one cares about your c-appy videos. Stop talking corp-speak. Show us what you intend to do and then do it. Both parts of that last sentence are key. Think of it as a win-win for you. If you show us what you are going to do, people who dont agree will quit and you save on severance. People who agree will stay and you will get a smaller pool of more dedicated people. Your severance costs will again be lower as you will only need to fire from this smaller pool as you move work offshore.

@jokz well he is certainly developing his friends' bank accounts.

Jokes aside, being objective, G cant develop people as that sure needs a vision and a path. From all I can see, they are still in the process of figuring out what the company will do and how it will look.

I am on the fence about the new guys. They talk with conviction, but none have a background in a product shop. None. Its one of those situations where the lead lemming his highly confident of his leadership as he leads the rest over the cliff. I could hope that it doesnt happen, but hope is not a strategy. So I will keep one foot out the door just to be safe and so should you.

You don't build a business, you develop people, and the people make the business successful. "

Honestly I dont care if corporate services functions are slimmed down. We have too many "business partners" from HR.

OTOH, if GK wants to do things right, he should think about rewarding the people who work hard to build the products we make. We have lost enough talent as is, I dont see how the current "transformation" is going to less scary for people.

HR here. We will soon see a cull in corporate services. Already a plan forming. They spent the last week and will spend the next few weeks deciding on "what we will become as a company when we grow up". Not my words.

I will not be surprised if we get focused on content, digital marketing, IOT, AI/ML and analytics. Oh yeah, throw in cloud on all of this cause why not - we cant be digital unless we are blowing smoke out our backside anyway.

Oh and the new guys make well over $1.5M each, of course LTI is a major part of it. Whoever posted the range below is off by 30-50%.

@fytp+16LWD2sm I don't agree with what you said. We know (or can assume) that these new people came in with 1-1.5M in compensation. Yes its a lot, but it is what you need to pay in the market to attract the quality of people needed for a turnaround. Yes it could be seen as nepotism since these are GK's buddies, but hey that's what life is. You think people at these levels get hired on monster.com? No. They are always someone's best friends who end up getting lucky.

I believe that even if GK brings his own people into the org... could they be worse than what already exists? He just needs to make sure he gets rid of the incompetent management that is sitting below him trying to cover their arses and incompetencies. BS^2 need to go (BL ST)!

Word has it that the all pay increases and promotions were turned down due to the state of the business but there’s obviously money to hire 4 new Execs; 3 from Cognizant! Smacks of nepotism at its finest and it’s still rife even with the change of leadership. Sad times at HV

The 2nd, 3rd, 4th lines management will always find ways to show GJ their value. When cuts are necessary, the "leaf node" guys/gals are let go. Of course the management favorite, buddies will be protected to continue holding the empire already built.

Its not just Korn Ferry. Heard there are more firms looking. They may as well not bother if all the hiring done by GK is friends and family.
