Thread regarding Barnes & Noble layoffs

B&N is trying to keep all the new BAD NEWS quiet

They've tried to quietly fire employees, they don't want anyone to know how bad sales are and they certainly don't want you to know how many stores are closing. But here's another!

Corporate is telling stores to stop ordering anything extra!
Yeah.
Pandemic still going out & we can’t order cleaning supplies.
If customers knew that, even less would shop.

But yay to the massive liquidation sales.

Customers who return for a we put ourselves out of business sale , will be further disappointed.
There’s not a lot of product in the stores. Pretty sure they’ll ship out the legos, vinyl and more expensive items.

So basically they are only ordering best sellers, if that? I can't wait for the bankruptcy/closure announcement. Down with BN.

But yay to the massive liquidation sales.

Corporate is telling stores to stop ordering anything extra! They're extremely nervous how the next few months will go and don't want to be stuck with anything should the company go under.

Have they posted anything important on the Bookseller FB page?

I tried to join the FB bookseller Group and I was not allowed. No response.

B&N Bookseller Group on Facebook is censoring all posts now!

"Post Pre-Approval has been turned on. This will remain the norm for this group. Too many irrelevant posts happening.
Let's stick to the main goal of this group. Bookselling and all it involves."

Tell your co-workers to come here instead!

Used to be ,you could post on Facebook, on BN page, under “visitor posts”. Now it doesn’t allow you to ! Controlling the perception that all is well w/ BN service.

The person below me sounds just like your typical BN manager. They even shop at the same retail locations! Yikes!

You have to understand we are in the midst of a pandemic.

Every store i return to is empty.
Not a lot of people shopping B&N, Macys, Kohls, etc.

In light of that, everyone is laying off furloughed employees,
not just B&N.
They have no choice, financially.

I can't imagine the NY Times would pursue a story with this, since
all retailers are doing it.

If NY Times or Pub Weekly was going to look into they would’ve started by now. BN will get them to squash it.

From what I understood of Elliot's & Daunt's acquisition of BN, the company would no longer be public. So, stockholders shouldn't be an issue, currently. However, if potential customers read the CA website, they'll steer clear.

Wow. I just read through the reviews on 2 pages of the Consumer Affairs website. BN has plenty of reasons to be worried. Customers keep saying how they're giving their business to Amazon. Once you piss people off with poorly trained associates, and, you can't deliver on your promises, you're toast!

Regarding the O.P., there are some articles similar to what was posted above. However, if you search "layoffs", you won't find anything pertaining to the 2020 situation. I contacted the NY Times & Publisher's Weekly. A staff member from PW contacted me & said they're looking into multiple tips.
