Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

Experience is a liability here

The longer you've been at Macy's the better your chance of being laid off. I don't know of any other company where experience is a liability. Instead of feeling safe for being here for nearly two decades, I'm petrified every single day that I might be given my walking papers. If that isn't wrong, I don't know what is.

True dat 4mha+16IeF8RC. I am one of those hourly execs whose position was abolished, and since no suitable equivalent role was available I was only given severance. I am now applying for entry level positions w/Macy's and have been assured that my pay, regardless of my experience, would be $10-12 an hr. Because that is what the pay is for sales associate (notwithstanding merit raises people accrue over the years). To add insult to injury, they then tell me they won't be rehiring me since I am "overqualified". (((rolleyes)))

My take on this is that staff with longevity were hit hardest because the decision was money based. Macy's streamlined expenditures by cutting overhead to ensure immediate financial liquidity.
They have started discretionary rehiring, most likely at a much lower hourly rates, taking advantage of a large pool of unemployed willing to accept. It's strategy. Right or wrong.

100% TRUE!!! Our stire laid off according to years of service no matter what the performance was. If that isn't injustice and discrimination what is? It was like walking the plank because people would know where they fall in line. You would often hear" I'm next, no I'm next " which was gut wrenching 😢.people with the worst performance on paper and work ethics were kept and those with the longest years of service let go. It is difficult to fathom that humans are treated like that but there are laws. It is up to people to utilize these tools. Something has to give. All the best!

I worked in a store for 20 years - opened credits, made goals and had excellent attendance - laid off. Got a new job😀 where I open credits, make goals, have excellent attendance and I am appreciated.
