Thread regarding Bed Bath & Beyond layoffs

My thoughts...

Long time ASM demoted from ASM50 to ASM45. Lost about $9K. That’s about 5-7 years of raises to get back to the original salary. Now, in a poor retail economy, I think most of us understand that everyone may have to “bite the bullet for the good of the company”. The problem is that if we turns things around, and we produce record earnings for our shareholders, we employees will never be financially rewarded. Go back to the raises before the recession of 2008 (5%), and compare them to any year after(1.5%). We had some good years, but never reaped the rewards at store level.

Secondly, while workforce reductions hurt, the separated associates are no longer affecting the morale of the organization. In most cases they recover to bigger and better opportunities, even if in the short term they struggle economically and emotionally. On the other hand, when you reduce the pay for active associates, and ask them to do the same job, the natural inclination is to slack off.

Either MT did not think through the affects on organizational morale, or there are future plans to replace all managers in the not too near future.

Par for the course. When the 2008 recession hit, hours were decreased by about 40% in our store. Which was fine when the sales were down, but within 18 months our sales came back and exceeded pre recession levels by about 15%, but hours never came close and we were running about 20% below before. The mantra is always “more sales, less hours”.......always.

Really a shame to think of it that way. The people who got cut are the ones with the most experience who were able to help customers most efficiently. So not only are the ones left having to pick up the extra 'slack' (hard to think of it as slack when employees have been overworked and tense for months now) but with the loss of training standards, anyone new brought in has no reason to go 'above and Beyond' for customers, and no one left to teach them how to care. It's retail... the people who stuck around long enough to be FT stayed because the company was better than other retailers. Not anymore. There won't be any more loyalty from inside.

Exactly what I said! We start to back to pay from 10 years ago.

Store managers need a cut as well. Fair is fair.

I’m sure when the stores start closing they will have more than enough management on hand. They can shuffle people rather than term them all. That’s probably part of the plan.

Let’s see if there are any senior people left in a year.
