Thread regarding Walmart layoffs

Not so appetizing?

Just read a very smart analysis on reasons why Walmart's grocery shares are rising slower than those of our rivals. I would say that losing a piece of the pie in groceries has also something to do with our management who couldn't care less about our reputation.

Here is the analysis: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-08-25/walmart-s-supermarket-rivals-are-eating-into-its-grocery-share

I'm not surprised by this the last time I went grocery shopping at Walmart the strawberries had mold on them they don't have enough people to keep the produce section smelling like it there's no mold in there. They have plenty of people to shop for other people but they do not have enough people to keep the areas looking clean and nice and to be able to help people when needed. The days when the store were clean well kept and the produce was fresh was back when Sam was still alive and running the stores now every two years of the bunch of layoffs so nobody knows if they're going to be able to keep their job they're overworked too many things to do with too few people and I'm sure all of our executive say nothing but this is business this is how business is getting done. I might pay a little bit more to go to another store but at least I know that the produce doesn't have mold on it and if I need help from an associate I can get it

The article points a few reasonable thoughts but I just have to make a couple of points:
1) % of shoppers is higher now than in January so the world of WM isn't coming to an end
2) Walmart loses food share over the holiday season every year for the same reason they didn't grow share at the same rate as other retailers during the core pandemic months - WM has greater foot traffic and simple can't grow that traffic at the same % rate other retailers can.
3) WM could not have serviced more grocery shoppers In April / May than they did - anyone who shopped food during this time could tell you that
4) the article talks about share price over the last week - who cares - compare the different companies on a 12 month change and you will have a different picture
I'm not a big Walmart fan because I think they have abandoned what made them great and they simply don't behave in a trustworthy manner any longer with suppliers or employees. With that said, losing share during the pandemic months isn't a story at all..... WM ceding lower income / younger shoppers to Aldi is a story that will have an impact over time - no one on 8th street seems too concerned about that (yes, I know everyone is working from home)

I want to say the pandemic played a role in this. I saw most other grocery chains taking quick action with the corona virus, such as mask wearing, signs asking to social distance, etc. Walmart was late to the dance (if they even showed up) because they didn't want to cut into profits and spend the money to make their customers safe. (Well, as safe as possible as can be in a pandemic.)

I would go to Kroger, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods and many others and they had their employees spraying down the carts, making masks mandatory and limiting shoppers in their stores. Walmart? They couldn't care less. Their associates weren't wearing their masks properly, customers had to wipe down their own carts (IF Walmart even had the cleaning supplies to do so), no limits to the shoppers in their stores, no mask enforcement, etc. I don't believe my nearby Walmart even has the plastic barriers up at the registers yet whereas everywhere else I go, they do.

I would shop at Walmart and maybe, 10%,of the customers would be wearing masks. When I would go elsewhere those stores would have a 90% compliance rate. Walmart did it to themselves demonstrating they don't care about their associates or customers. Only the almighty profit.
