Thread regarding Bed Bath & Beyond layoffs

Former BBBers reach out & help out!

Sad for the former BBB folks that stayed and are going through this. If you’ve already moved on and your company is hiring, reach out and refer your former coworkers. Your new company would rather hire someone that you can vouch for than just someone off the street. I’ve kept up with former colleagues over the years and have already referred and connected them to places that I know need full time staff. Let’s take care of each other.

Yet another post that makes little sense. You worked in Social Service..liked it but stayed due to your coworkers? Yup..that line makes a lot of sense. So then you left Social Work and came to BBb? I think my future is in teaching basic English and grammar.

Not getting nasty but i have seen so many conniving arse kissers at my store weasel into ft and then get cut a new one. They thought themselves a big deal at the time and are reaping the karma.

In my social service work, i pretty much liked the work but stayed due to coworkers,

Work in a massive bbby and can honestly say i liked the job more than over 50% of the workers. Too many who thought they were gods gift to retail and polished the t–ds of higher ups.

Well, you got your prize with the reality that retail doesn't care how important you think you are. All that backbiting you did to other employees, and the joke is on you. You s—ed up to get full time at a company any fool could see was inclined to eliminate it.

And no, hardly speaking to all I have worked with. It is just that it seems the genuinely caring good workers with integrity moved on, leavingat our store a bunch of folks with knives out waiting to stick them in your back or someone else's back. Also amazing how much some of the dm spend their time talking to old pals while people with a work ethic are doing their jobs for them.

I think that 9 paragraph job saga is the longest post I have ever read on here.

At least I'm trying to help people out, as opposed to breaking people down and making judgemental remarks about what you can and cannot talk about. This is a forum for people to talk about layoffs, companies, personal experiences and share information with other people. If you don't like being icked out about hearing what other people make, then maybe you should do your own self examination and do something productive or helpful with your time.

And yes, this is the internet after all. Everything you read from these forums should always be taken with a grain of salt. I don't claim to know everything, and I don't share my salary to brag. I share it because its important to be an example of why it should be okay to discuss salaries. If you don't like it, you don't. I can't force you to like what I say. And if I'm annoying you, then stop reading what I'm writing. Lol

There is tons of salary info online at reputable sites. Anybody can write anything on this board. There us no way to confirm anything. It is considered rude to say how much you make to strangers. It is a big waste of time for a company to hire you to only work a few weeks. Yes sometimes things are not a fit but when it happens more then once then maybe it is time for self examination to save everyone time. And when people say their managers are lazy, their coworkers are lazy, their dog is lazy..makes you think.

Stop stigmatizing people talking about salaries. This is information that should be shared, and the stigma is created by employers to fool people into thinking it's bad. Why? Because it gives them a way to pay person 1 more money than person 2, even if they do the same job.

Also, its important for people to get a feel of what's out there, and how much they're paying for positions. This helps people save time from applying for companies or positions that can't support their salary requirements.

And yes, there have been some companies that I didn't last too long in. I've learned to watch out for red flags early on, so I don't waste my time or the company's time. And no, it's not just about "other people being lazy". It's about finding out what fits best based on my needs or the company's needs. I am not too proud to say if I feel as if I'm not the best person for something I tried.

Sounds like you do not last too long at jobs. And of course it is other people that are lazy. Interesting so many people who post here work harder then everybody else. And they seem to be the ones talking about how much money they make/will make.

I've been out for a year and a half. First job I landed after BBBY was Walmart. And dear God was that a mistake. Seriously the worst place to work at period. I was hired on as a "Customer Service Manager", but it was more like front end lead. All I did was babysit cashiers and get yelled at by lazy managers who would just watch the line get longer, cut cashier hours, and they NEVER came up to ring, even though its expected of them. I last there just a few months. Come to find out they eliminated that position shortly after I left.

My next job after that was a sales manager for a local furniture store. I was making 50k/year vs 65k as an ASM for BBBY. After 2 weeks of working there and having literally 6 customers a day, i couldn't stand how boring it was so I left.

After that, I worked at a bank. And although it was also slow and boring most days, I liked it because we had a lot of busy work we could do to help pass the time.

When Covid hit, I had to homeschool my son so I ended up leaving to focus on my family. Now, I'm able to go back to school and get my degree in something that I will make double what I was making as an ASM. I'm 33 and I thought I was going to be too old to go back to school, but a lot of people in my online classes are the same age as me, some are over 60.

What I'm trying to say is things will get better. Its never too late to go back to school and explore other careers that you are interested in. Everyones situation is different, though... some land another job right away that just fits so well, they end up staying there for a long time. Some might have to jump from a couple of companies before I find the right one where I can see myself retiring from in 35 years or so.

What I've come to realize is that retail as we know it is dying. It is so much harder now to find a company that you see yourself working in for more than 5 years. A lot of companies are being more frugal in how much they pay their managers, and how many managers they have on staff. In person customer service is being replaced by online shopping and curbside pickups.

Who knows how long the covid pandemic will last, and if people's buying habits will change and shift even further online. Customers are realizing how much more convenient it is to just get even the basics online, as opposed to going to the store and picking up more than they need.

I highly recommend you consider any job outside of retail. The retail job market is so volatile right now, I wouldnt feel safe taking another risk with working in retail. There are a lot of jobs out there where you can use the knowledge and experience you made at BBBY.

Good luck to everyone.

I,ve been out more then a year. No full time retail jobs. Very few part time positions in safe neighborhoods. Working for less and less pay, with less and less hours barely puts food on the table. Sad times for now.
