Thread regarding Ricoh layoffs

More info about layoffs

Can confirm about layoffs. Received a email to attend a conference call at 4. That’s how we were informed, by a conference call where no questions were allowed. Later I find out I was cut based on the company’s needs. Though I have over 3 comptia certs I was released while people with less training, less certs and less seniority still have a job. Also I’m a veteran, which according to ricohs own web site, they go out of their way to hire. Makes you wonder how cuts are being done.

My manager was not asked to fill out a form and there was no way he would have agreed for me to be laid off due to my productivity and technical skills. Upper management decides with no input from other management.
You work usually to the end of the week (but they cut off your login so you really can't do anything or go into the office from the moment you're notified) and you do get a severance package.

Ricoh has been known to let go the older employees. They have lost law suits for this. Find a good employment lawyer.

There is a nice article on careerminds.com about things employers have to consider before offering severance packages to employees over 40. This has good information for both employers/employees when a layoff occurs.

I wonder if the people let go got a severance package and that would keep Ricoh above the law?

40yrs and above are considered a protected class. If Ricoh were targeting older workers they would open themselves up to an age discrimination lawsuit. Hope that's not the case.

Seems to me older workers are being targeted. All of the people I have seen being laid off were those that had many years in the company. The rest took early retirement packages. More retirements coming in October. It's all about the money.

So the monetary savings from all this won't be realized for several months. So it makes one wonder if the goal all along with this and the VSIP program, was to get rid of the older workers.

It's my understanding that those who were let go are going to work another month and then receive a severance package upon departure. Managers were told to fill out a form on each of their reports to basically say if an employee was expendable or not. Those who were productive were kept on and those who weren't, well...

Did the people that got left go have to work for a specified time before leaving? Did they get a severance package?
