Thread regarding Walmart layoffs

No More Cashiers @ Fayetteville, Ark (100% self-checkout)

  • FAYETTEVILLE, Ark — According to Walmart representatives, the store on Joyce Boulevard in Fayetteville is being used as a test site to launch all self-checkout counters.
  • This store no longer has cashiers and has self-checkouts only.
  • However, there will be self-checkout hosts at the front of the stores to help customers if needed.

Hosts will be able to check out shopper's groceries just like they used to if a customer prefers it to be done that way. Walmart representatives say all they have to do is ask.

Walmart says they want this process to be as easy as possible for customers and associates, who are always willing to help.

They could not give a specific timeframe, but say if the test run in Fayetteville is successful, the company will launch this at other stores across the country.

Walmart representatives say the timing will depend on several things. One of those things is letting employees and customers weigh in on the test site in Fayetteville.

I work SCO and we expanded to 18 units. Yes I have noticed not as many cashiers on the schedule so it has forced some people to SC. I know for a fact our store loses a metric ton of merchandise through SC. That’s the biggest area of Shrink there is and I catch the same people over and over or they go to a set I’m not working. I catch more tag switching too. Corporate doesn’t care. I think they can write off their loses. They are taking jobs from people so they don’t have to pay increases or Medlicle or PTO/PPTO. WALMART IS STINGY. In 2016 Doug M CEO was worth $18 million with salary, yearly bonuses and stocks. Walmart is the largest and riches global company. They could pay associates $15+ and the bigwigs would still make way more than enough. But they act like you are privileged to work at Walmart for $13 or less.
They could do better on their discount card too. 10%, but not on many of the grocery items. Other box stores(Target) and grocery stores do more for their associates.
I wish Sam’s children and grandchildren and so forth had his outlook on taking care of his associates. He believed in investing in his employees. He alway preached listen to your associates. We’re on the front line and we have valuable input.

Our local Foodlion remodeled and decided not to have any self check outs. Their business double compared to WM. I live in a small area where older citizens refuse to use self checkouts when they have a cart full of groceries.

@3xtq Sorry to burst your bubble, but productivity has risen at a breakneck pace. Wages have, but not nearly as much as you believe. Yes they rise, but due to inflation, workers spending power is much less than, say, 10 years ago. Things like housing/rent, medical costs, new vehicles and d–g prices always outpace inflation, so anyone with these bills/costs make less year over year.

Check this link out:

Unfortunately, companies like Walmart cry poverty when it comes to giving their employees/associates decent pay raises. Despite the fact they received tax cuts by trump and the republicans that enriched their companies. (Go research what they did with this money.) On top of that, they can afford to give their VPs and Executives 5, 6 and even 7 digit pay raises every year. Other than making business decisions, what value do they bring to the bottom line?

The associates in the trenches keep the company alive, yet live paycheck to paycheck barely surviving. Go figure

Labor is our single highest expense. Wages have risen at a breakneck pace. To offset that, we have fewer associates around at that higher rate and change the evals system to slow down long term associates from making "too much." Everyone here is between the 12$ to 16$ range no matter what you do or length of service. PTO accrual rate is the only carrot for longer term folks, say 10 or more years. As the calls for higher start rates become reality, this will only speed things up.

@1njn This was done on purpose. Not so much the slow cashiers, but the lack of cashiers. This gave the customers 2 choices, stand in a line 5-6 (or more) deep wasting their time to be checked out or use the self check outs to get on their way. They essentially trained us to use the SCOs as they slowly got rid of cashiers. Now Walmart has the 'statistics' that show people 'prefer' the SCOs.

(During the covid pandemic our knuckle dragging, mouth breathing, inbred customers would take full shopping carts (or two) through the SCOs causing the lines to be 20+ people deep making them them just as bad a wait as the POS's with a cashier.)

Honestly prefer self check over the registers cause some of those cashiers are insanely slow 😂 nothing against them but I don’t wanna wait 20 minutes to check out when I can get in and out under a minute at self check

Doesn’t surprise me. Why pay cashiers when they can have customers ring up their own items. Money saver for them.

This is a natural consequence of pushing a $15 minimum wage for people who don't bring $15+ dollars of productivity.
Walmart is smart to do this now in case Biden wins and pushes a nationwide $15 (or more) minimum wage.
Be careful what you ask for!
