IBM major worldwide Cloud outage!

What a surprise... Could it be because of the recent layoffs?

IBM probably had 2 people working to resolve while 100's of managers sat around in a daze.

IBM blames the external service provider for the BGP related MASSIVE outage. It is said that a poor craftsman blames his tools. Is IBM in over it's head for being a cloud service provider? Do they know what they are doing? This is no child's play - it's a real serious business to maintain an extensive, global cloud IP network at four 9's or better.

A vast majority of IBM customer-facing employees are for the most part cloud illiterate or best case, semi- literate. Many can spout the top 10 buzz words but have little in- depth idea of what is the cloud offering or business. IBM spent the last year educating the sales force on cloud but it was mostly money wasted. No one really cares about cloud. IBM is not very competitive in cloud as customer perception does not view IBM as a major Cloud player and, anyway, most customers have already chosen AWS, Azure, or Google as their primary cloud provider. IBM must convince the market that it is relevant which is a tall order given the general sales employee apathy towards cloud. There is no real buzz or excitement around cloud at IBM.

Based on my conference calls today, 90%+ of people at IBM have no idea there was an outage last night. Probably because 90%+ of what IBM does has nothing to do with Cloud, despite the hype.

My side project StatusGator monitors status pages (including IBM's ill-fated status page) and I'm seeing more than 10% of the nearly 800 services we monitor having an outage right now.
So it appears to affect anyone who depends on IBM Cloud.

IBM Cloud is not a major player with a low single digit market share and bad press like this will be the kiss of death for them.
