Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Just found out IBM is taking advantage of the downturn to hire cheap cleared workers and RAing anyone they can replace with them.

I’m a manager on a DOD project of the 8 people on my team 5 have been let go in the past few weeks all had a security clearance good reviews (I did them) etc. They are being replaced by cleared resources either affected by the pandemic or just leaving the military. Pay is low $45-$65k (DC area) for software engineers and network engineers. They all admitted to being desperate for a job and were attracted to the IBM brand. I hate that they are taking advantage of others misfortunes. Plus if they leave before 3 years they have to pay back bonuses and training/onboarding costs they are essentially stuck.

For the H1B commentor(s) not only is H1B bad but the offshoring jobs is a big reason. Last account I was on was 100% offshore with a contracted cheap 3rd party service company for any servers that needed to be touched. Only US people left on the account was the account team of a few SDM's DPE and PE

Before reading the troll's many comments, please read the original post. It says nothing about the replacement resources having an H1B. Troll - please go away. You are divisive, and we don't need that now. We have enough of it already.

Do the bots even realize H1B workers cant work in cleared environments? These positions OP mentioned are going to US citizens. I imagine they were over payed consultants getting replaced by cheap contractors happens all the time.

this has been going on for years....you are all only concerned now because its affecting you....yet when it didnt affect you , you were complicit and quiet. you know IBM is hiring H1Bs and replacing US citizens, but as long as you have your 2,500 square foot house, your SUV in the driveway, and your trips to wisconsin, you are good. Now its coming home. If you dont speak out, it will only get worse. You know who wants more H1Bs, and yet you keep voting for them.

With all the chaos going on now you could probably get away with it. Something needs to be done. We can’t stand by and let these people pour into our country.

Things will get worse from here.
When outsourcing companies become desperate enough for growth, they will wave enough cash in front of Senators and Representatives to allow clearing of h1b or perhaps even preferential clearing of h1b over citizens.
Question is when not if.

I have so many questions.
How did IBM sell these people to the client when the skill set is not the same?
How is IBM not busted by DoD for unethical staffing practices?
Why didn’t you fight to save your staff?

What practice are you in?

Why do you protect H-1Bs so much? They are part of the reason why you were laid off. If the program was ended, everyone in the tech industry would be safer than they are now.

It's a pity these forums aren't moderated. The H1B troll has rendered the IBM board unreadable. S—ed to be laid off and was initially happy to find this place as a way to help with navigating the layoff process and separation from IBM but I'm checking in less and less.

Thought they were trying to decrease headcount? Are they being hired as contractors?

It's not just IBM and they aren't always H1B. Companies are taking advantage of people desperate for work. Usually by hiring contractors so they don't have the liability of benefits packages and severance when they lay them off too.
