Thread regarding IBM layoffs

WARN Act regulates lay-offs

In the US, the 1988 WARN Act regulates big company layoffs. IBM usually can manage the size of layoffs to avoid federal oversight. Not this time; it's too big. The WARN Act "...protects employees, their families, and communities by requiring most employers with 100 or more employees to provide 60 calendar-day advance notification of plant closings and mass layoffs of employees." It even requires that labor unions and mayors be notified, too. That's why you got the 60 days. I've seen layoffs in Sales that gave the poor IBMer only 2 weeks pay. At least some Congresspeople were looking out for working citizens back then. Not happy with your layoff? GO VOTE. Don't mistake our position in society. We see ourselves as self-sustaining professionals, but in reality we're all just interchangeable Labor.

Most politicians on both sides go in with no assets and retire multi millionaires. Insider trading and under the table deals.

IBM could have used Covid 19 excuse similar as T.....Natural disaster only required 2 weeks notice for T folks.....Covid 19 per WARN is a natural disaster....Unbelievable

According to NY WARN IBM filed on 5/21 which was day of RA's but it was not posted on the site until 5/29. Instead of 60 days notice it was -7.

From what I've seen, the WARN Act is basically toothless. I've seen companies ignore it pretty much with impunity.

@ola: Agreed. They pretend to care at election time, but that's about the extent of it.

I am not enough of a history buff to comment on whether Congresspeople ever cared about citizens, but they do not know.
