Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Powers future

Found this surfing last night. It appears IBM has abandoned power when it comes to private cloud. They will only support virtual server now.

That means all LINUX, AI, and Cognitive Will port off of Power. You have until 8/22 to move your workloads

Power has moved to a replacement strategy only. Goodbye Power you don’t align with IBM’s strategic directions anymore If I had to speculate Power is for sale cheap

@bplf+15kcDzwW – Can you provide a link or identify the analysts' report wherein this information was cited? Or at least name the analyst Group (Gartner, Forrester, etc.)?

Yeah and I had read in some analyst story that GCP had a larger user base on Power than IBM did even despite just being launched and that just seems like a really big red flag if it's true

Power as a service now offered by Google cloud!

I doubt that Power has much of any future with IBM given the recent developments such as this and the RAs. I'm kind of curious what that might mean for Z down the road, but maybe they're hoping someone (Google maybe) will take Open Power and run with it but I doubt it will happen.

IBM will keep AIX and OS/400 (thats their IP). The Power HW will become a unique/commodity HW alternative when you need or want it. IBM will code to the Power HW standards just like any other ISV

What happens to iSeries if IBM drops power? Thousands of customers run p and i series servers.

@pwb Storage is increasingly x86 based these days, not Power. Even ESS has moved to x86: the ESS3000 is based on the same hardware as FS9000. Mind you, this makes it even more likely that IBM will want to dispose of Power - but probably without Storage attached. China is a good candidate, the government there would love to have a datacenter class processor of their own and not be dependent on Intel's x64 or even ARM. And by adopting it as a "state standard" they could guarantee enough of a market to sustain it. (Anybody else old enough to remember how European countries kept firms like ICL, Bull, and Olivetti alive and selling proprietary systems for so long?)

Unfortunately, senators and congressmen get paid under the table by lobbyists from Washington DC to promote and grow H-1B program at the expense of Americans workers.

Using his network and advice from billionaires and wealthy executives, Trump is protecting H1-B jobs when millions of Americans are losing their precious high paying jobs. H1-Bs aren’t going anywhere...

No one is going to get rid of H1Bs. They are the bread and butter of the super wealthy in this country.
The super wealthy includes our commander in chief. He will not be doing what you think, that is just the carrot he continues to hold out to his followers. He will not screw over his donor, his fellow super wealthy citizens. They are all what really counts to him. Followers can be lied to.

They will strike a deal with whoever buys it. My guess is Power and Storage will be sold together as Power chips go inside Storage and Z. Likely buyers are Lenovo for the open power in China or Samsung for the chip manufacturing business. IBM will keep the Legacy OS’s. Look for a global foundries deal. (IBM will almost give away the business to dump heads) IBM doing the research and guaranteeing a market on the IBM cloud. I would expect the deal to be announced in 3rd q with closure by end of the year. It’s quite sad that IBM could take a 6 billion dollar franchise and mismanage it down to where we are at today. I guesstimate Power brings in 125 million in HW and 125 million in SW for each legacy piece. Storage if you drop DSXXX out since it’s considered enterprise, most likely runs in the same range.

Yeah, sad day. Looks like Power is being wound down and will go EOL. As we know IBM wants to move away from hardware and purely deliver service via the cloud. I guess Z will continue, but it goodnight Power and goodnight storage!
