Thread regarding Bed Bath & Beyond layoffs

Quit the whining

All I see on here are people complaining they have to go back to work and cant get unemployment anymore. But yet I guarantee most of you are out of the house everyday shopping or what not. The $600 will be over soon and then you'll have to have a job. Go back to work and stop making excuses and crying. And yes BBB would rather pay you to work than to sit at home. Go figure.

I'm semi retired. Left the Bay area . Cost of living, riots, looting, violence. My safety is first. 14yrs of BBB is enough. I had a good run. But the pressure of cut hours, overworked, rude customers, and SM constantly screaming at us. Covid-19 and furlough gave me opportunity to move to MT. Plus I couldn't afford rent & had to leave. I'm happy here & wanna leave on good terms

It is also our employer's duty to not call us back UNTIL THEY ARE IN A POSITION TO PAY US. We're not working for free, and if you're not in a position to bring back our FTers at their full 35 hours/week, and PTers at a "we'll call you when we need you again, maybe next week", then you have no business calling them back to work. Obviously you don't have bills to pay, and none of us can afford to file for partial unemployment and wait another 5-6 weeks for claims to be processed. People have to eat, people have to keep the roofs over their head. If the company can't afford to bring us back at full hours, then the company can't afford to bring us back, period. No one is saying they want to stay on unemployment, people are saying bring us back when the company is actually ready to reopen. The solution isn't "Go find another job and be grateful for what you have," Dear Corporate Stooge, the solution is this company getting its s–t together.

To the person just below me with the long post. This is one of the most intelligent, well thought out posts that I have seen here. To the people who have been furloughed–did you spend anytime thinking about what other careers you could purse and applying to other jobs (yes I am aware that job postings have been sparse lately, but there are open jobs out there). Those of you who are cashiers and stock people–is that the only thing that you want to do for your entire lives? Don't you have other skills and knowledge sets that can be used in a different line of work? Brick and mortar retail has changed significantly and not just at BBB and things are not going back to the way they were, at least no time soon. Unemployment is meant to carry you while you look for another job it is not there to carry us until we FEEL like getting back to work.

In my state (NJ) if you only get 4 hrs. of work which is less than your normal hours, I believe you can still collect unemployment. There is a spot where you can enter the wages you are paid and you should then get the difference from State Unemployment between what your unemployment is and the wages you are getting. That happen to me before when collecting unemployment. I got a part-time job for a couple of weeks. I declared those wages and unemployment deducted the wage amount from my unemployment. When the part-time job ended, my unemployment went back up to its former amount. Please everyone take the time to do some research and find out what your state unemployment offers.

In addition, please remember all states have been drastically impacted by the COVID and all retail has been impacted as well, not just Bed Bath & Beyond. Quite frankly, life as we knew it before mid-March is now changed and we may never see things the same again. Our headquarters is located in northern NJ in the 2nd most COVID riddled area in the country. Now that the states are reopening, ALL RETAIL including BB&B have to work with CDC, Federal and State guidelines. Since we have a presence in all 50 states that means dealing with 50 different state regulations. There are going to be changes to way we do our jobs that may stay with us permanently. Keep in mind things could be either slow or hectic for a few weeks as everyone in retail figures things out. I for one can't image what it will be like to work for Kohl's who has the deal with Amazon to take back Amazon returns.

Also I saw mention now may be the time to move on. That might be true. Many companies are looking for help. Just remember we now know what is essential vs. non-essential retail. Remember that if you make a move. Should COVID come back (and it sounds like it might late fall or early winter), if you move to an essential company you could end up working throughout the next round. So think things through and do your research if you plan to move on. The same applies to unemployment - please research what your state offers if you go back to work with much less hours than before.

Thanks to people who post with information that is helpful to us all. I ask everyone to take a deep breath as the next few weeks will be different and maybe difficult. But like I said this affects all retail not just us and it affects every aspect of our lives. Good luck to us all.

So your message is to forget about paying your bills, we're going to give you $45/week and you should be grateful for the "opportunity". Quit licking the boot, it's not good for you.

If BBB wants us back they can give us a full work schedule and full pay. If they’re unable to do that, don’t call us. My store is calling staff in to work 4 hours a week. You think that’s acceptable, to call people off unemployment where they may be getting $200/week (not counting the extra $600) to get a $45/week paycheck? It’s a d–k move, and anyone who thinks that’s ok needs to stop drinking the Kool-Aid and get their head checked.
