Lets see, 22k people whose average cost to the company is about $200K each (that's including benefits) comes to hmm $4B about 25% of the cost of the Redhat acquisition.

In US tech companies, the scheme is slightly more sophisticated than H1Bs replacing individual citizen's jobs, and they are in fact paid less than the (mostly older/senior) citizens they are replacing. The outsourcing companies have a pyramid structure, where a few on-shore H1B workers drive the work of an army of very low paid off-shore workers on the same contract. Yes, the paperwork and justification is a bit tedious, but these companies have in house lawyers to push it through efficiently and managers have to write up the scope and job band comparisons to make it a lucrative deal for the companies. Been there, done that. One-year comp sci MS programs at all our major universities feed this pipeline and I have worked job fairs at some where 95% of the candidates are from India. Nothing against these students or workers; that's just how the system and incentives work these days...

I am reaching out to my senators and congressmen to ask them to vote YES, not no on S386. Why? Because you would get a bigger audience with twitter but feel the need to be a racist and post this c-ap about H1B’s on every thread. This has to be because you can be anonymous. Most companies pick H1B’s if they have a unique project that needs to come up fast and has a limited lifespan. The person who keeps saying H1B’s never leave has no idea what they are talking about. H1B’s get a 3 year visa that is quite extensive in their vetting (takes 6-9months). Yes that cost real money to do the lawyer fees, vetting, interviewing, scoping, etc etc. Once in country, most companies work the H1B’s very hard, as the clock is ticking. At 3 years they must go home, and the company that hired them must verify they went home. You can get extended for another 3 years, but it’s quite rare. If the H1B person Who is posting all, of this c-ap is actually real (most likely a bot) they should be arguing against the offshoring of work that is now performed in country. The offshoring Is a far bigger number and has far more devastating consequences for the communities impacted. H1B’s pay taxes, and live here spurring the economy. Offshoring goes off shore and every dollar/pound is lost

Say, as it's often the case, American citizens get laid off and H-1Bs get to keep theirs, in a sense H-1Bs are replacing Americans jobs;
This is on top of bringing over 85K new H-1Bs per year.
One can see why American employees have the right to be upset about H-1Bs in America.

I am not saying H-1B should go away. I am saying that they should limit India’s access to H-1B visas by adding country cap limits to these visas. This would allow them to import talent, but limit the big consulting firms from abusing these visas. They should only allow US companies to get these visas instead of giving most of them to Indian outsourcing sweatshops like Infosys, Tata, Wipro, Cognizant, etc. these companies and the abuse that India does with this program gives all H-1Bs a bad name. If you control and limit India’s access to this program less people will have problems with H-1B. Right now over 95% of the visa abuse originated from this one country.

The sad thing is there is no intellectual discussion being stated in any of the posts against skilled immigration. Mostly wrong information with false claims. The numbers are wrong and it is funny to think a company is willing to deal with lawyers to hire a foreign national as oppose to a citizen. There is no apparent benefit. As I mentioned the salaries are highly regulated and being paid in par with similar band.

The question is not that the USA should run for the benefit of the Americans of course it should. The question is whether high skilled immigration is helping the future generations of Americans. And from what this country has seen over its lifetime is that the answer is yes.

They may have had other visas before h1b but the rules are clear. It is either you have a mechanism to attract talent or you lose the companies and they will move elsewhere.

Please take a look at average h1b salaries in reputable tech companies and you will all see H1B is not what you think it is.

There are more opportunities in this country than the rest of the world combined. No reason for anybody to worry about a new opportunity.

No one is going to get rid of H1Bs. They are the bread and butter of the super wealthy in this country.
The super wealthy includes our commander in chief. He will not be doing what you think, that is just the carrot he continues to hold out to his followers. He will not screw over his donor, his fellow super wealthy citizens. They are all what really counts to him. Followers can be lied to.

H1Bs by law cannot work for less money. The salary is part of the application and a big part of the approval process. Companies need to submit their mean and median salaries for the same band and H1B has to be en par. On top of that there are zip code based salary categories which are also taken into account.

It is true that H1B is abused as much as the system allows it to be. Improper use of H1B application will mostly likely to be rejected. IBM had 30% rejection last year. However, if you look at the average salaries on H1B on more successful companies, you will see that the average is very high.

Tesla(if you count Elon Musk as its effective founder), Google and many other companies are all founded by immigrants so high skilled immigration is a driving force for any country and creates future jobs. If you cut the supply then it may hurt the demand and these tech companies can easily move elsewhere. To keep the tech hubs here, these companies need access to the top talents around the world otherwise they will move.

The playbook nets out to approx 27.5% North America. 22k out of 80k Europe/Asia will have approx the same percentage varied over Feb -July. Again 22k out of Approx 100k. The rest of the world absorbed the remaining 22k. Mostly India 22k out of 130k.
