Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

Could be the end of malls

If lord and Taylor is going down and jcpenny is restructuring , M is the last man standing but that’s only good if other stores in the mall survive. Let alone the food courts.

I'm rooting for JCP to survive. While we share Class A malls with stores such as Nordstrom, Von Maur, and Neiman Marcus and SAKS, we share many Class B+ and B malls with JCP and Dillard's. Keeping JCP in those B+ and B malls is vital. I believe anything below a B Class is going to fail.

Per Green Street Advisors 2019 Annual Mall Grade Review, the number of malls in the U.S. by class is as follows:

A++: 37 malls
A+: 60 malls
A: 84 malls
A-: 95 malls
B+: 119 malls
B: 150 malls
B-: 98 malls
C+: 83 malls
C: 86 malls
C-: 150 malls
D: 49 malls

Luxury shopping malls like The Beverly Center, Hudson Yards, Bal Harbor Shops, Lenox Square & Phipps Plaza Atlanta, Las Vegas Fashion Show, South Coast Plaza will survive, malls the cater to the middle and lower class will not survive.

Malls are dead. Done. Ever.
Maybe some "A" malls will survive and adapt - but if you are in a B or C mall, your future is all but guaranteed. Nobody wants to be stuck inside those huge, aging structures anymore - especially with the continuing virus threat looming.

Freehold Mall in NJ lost a Nordstrom and Lord & Taylor during pandemic. For now, there is still a JC Penney. So the Macy's is all that's definitely left there. Can you imagine a mall with (potentially) three empty anchors??
