Thread regarding SeaWorld Entertainment Inc. layoffs

It's Union Time: The National Labor Board

About NLRB
Your Right to Form a Union
Not represented by a union, but want to be?

If a majority of workers wants to form a union, they can select a union in one of two ways: If at least 30% of workers sign cards or a petition saying they want a union, the NLRB will conduct an election. If a majority of those who vote choose the union, the NLRB will certify the union as your representative for collective bargaining. An election is not the only way a union can become your representative. Your employer may voluntarily recognize a union based on evidence - typically signed union-authorization cards - that a majority of employees want it to represent them. Once a union has been certified or recognized, the employer is required to bargain over your terms and conditions of employment with your union representative. Special rules apply in the construction industry.

Us furloughed employees are still employees until Sea World releases us. So as an employee, I say HELL YES! I’ll join a union, let’s setup a meeting and make this happen.

I'm in. Where do I sign? I don't believe HR has the power or interest to protect my job. SR holds all the power.

I haven't posted previously on this thread and I don't work for HR but I'm just saying, a union would only work if you have bargaining power. Yes, there are some specially trained departments that might be able to pull it off, but there is no incentive for seaworld to negotiate with people they can easily replace.

No, you are HR, media, or legal. Because you have no reason to be on this site. Other than put those of us down who want a union.
Don't worry we will get a union and demand more hourly pay. Give up your huge bonuses.

The irony is that going against these pro union posts are probably organizations looking to astroturf these forums into getting gullible people to join their cause, while accusing people that don’t agree with them of being HR. Of course they want to start a union, think of all the dues 3,000+ people are going to have to pay.

Sad. This company s—s all around and it’s not going to get better, and a union isn’t going to fix that. Good luck with paying dues on top of that $10.71 hourly rate still without health benefits because there’s going to be even fewer FT positions as this company fails. Seaworld isn’t known for its ability or willingness to attract or pay top talent in the first place, so those with the means to leave will continue to do so.

To the person who said FFS Are we starting this union thing again?? Shakes head, closes out this website and promises never to return. This is a site about layoffs so why are you on it? All of us are tired of the treatment and never knowing if today we will be laid off. We need a voice on our side and that is a union. Do you understand? JEEZE

Share this Union chain with active and furloughed employees at all parks.
I am not a furloughed employee. I have been with the company for more than 20 years. They keep changing our titles. I have seen the abuse, no raises while the board gets huge bonuses, taken away our "accrued" vacation, making us do the job of 3 to 5 employees. You are correct that the abuse has to end! We need a Union now more than ever.

If a Union doesn't make sense, why was SEA so afraid of them? Why did they have several corporate lawyers assigned to doing everything possible to block them from forming? Why does Disney have so many Union works? Thousands of Disney Union members are not highly skilled factory workers. They work in the parks and hotels. Jobs just like ours.

A Union would have a field day dealing with all the different issues going on at the parks. Most of all, it would be a HUGE thorn in senior management's side. That in itself would be worth it. You have a chairman of the board who doesn't care if you live or die running this whole company.

Entertainment Technical crew tried to get the Union IATSE involved back in 2011 I believe but Busch Gardens shot that down quickly plus didn’t have the required signatures needed.

Are you still employed? I am confident you are still employed and getting payed to reply to every issue on this site. Sad,that you grew up to support a company and talk down to other human beings who are hurting.

I’m not HR, but I’m also not gullible either.

If you think I said we don’t have unions because of entertainment and zoo, then you clearly have some critical reading issues as well.

I’m also not completely anti union either, but in SW’s case it doesn’t make sense.

It wouldn’t prevent furloughs and layoffs. Look at how many jobs get cut in manufacturing every year.

Most of the grievances you have wouldn’t be fixed by a union. They make sense in skilled trades where employees have bargaining power due to the amount of training and skills that have been invested into them. You can’t pick up a random person and expect them to work in a plant to assemble a complex machine like a car.

You can definitely pick up anybody off the street and have them vend a churro though.

Let's keep the momentum going.
Let's not back down
Let's stay SeaWorld/BuschGardens Strong
Treat us like humans.

The last thing they want is a union. That's why they have fought for years to keep unions out. It wasnt because of zoological and Entertainment.

Lol, unions.

This is a theme park run by a broke company. Way to blow another hole in the hull of a sinking ship.

There are two individual departments where unionizing makes sense. Zoological and Entertainment. All other departments consist of employees that can be taught a job in a couple of hours and are frankly replaceable.

A union doesn’t benefit anybody in this overall industry. Trades and manufacturing, yes. But it’s also another reason manufacturing has been increasingly moved out of the county.

Unionizing seaworld would be playing yourself.
