Nearly half of my (commission) sales team was laid off via the corporate "script" phone call, with no regard to seniority (or any logic for that matter). I was called late yesterday by my people leader asking if I would like to return to furlough status, even though they don't know when they will have enough hours to put me on the schedule (others are only just now up to 4 days a week). I was blindsided and asked for some time to think about it...I have to decide by tomorrow. Mind you I've already cleaned out my personal belongings and tossed a ton of customer contacts I didn't think I would be allowed to take out of the store (and I'm in a state with a very high Covid infection spike). Feel like I'm between a rock and a hard place...having somewhat decent health insurance at an upward age vs struggling to survive (make sales goals) in a pool of mostly amoral sharks. I am making a list of questions to ask before I decide. Any input would be helpful.

Only return if your insurance is reactivated and back dated so no coverage loss, and honestly I would argue the point to be able to keep the severance package as you are being asked this by Macy's, which is a big gamble on your part.
Get on the furlough wagon. Economy will pick up. It will remain slow for a long time so you have a chance to build other skills plus a quiet place to hang out.
Bravo to the last poster's store in being ethical and not bias.
Speaking of bias, flashback when investigators would come into the stores to "investigate a problem." It would be dishonest if discussions were had and biased information fed to investigators behind closed doors ahead of time. NO SUCH THING COULD HAPPEN RIGHT!
The affected colleagues would not stand a chance or given due process. I guess those who were on the inside would have seen and heard it all.
Unfair treatment of others is morally and ethically wrong. Investigatorswith trained degrees, have you ever wondered why there are so many complaints about one individual in place of power? Could all these people complaining be so wrong and disgruntled? Take a step back, think, do your jobs! People lose their livelihoods for biased treatments.
Assessment and ranking were based on your review (at least in my store, it was). If you were high ranking (this has nothing to do with seniority, but your credit apps per 40, work ethic etc) you were considered first and then it went down the line of who could be coachable.
If you need your Job, stay on furlough, if you dont then stay layed off.. Almost all companies are restructuring because of Covid.
Many of my friends who work in retail have been let go. It's very Sad.
To the poster wondering what ranking and assessment methods were used don't beat yourself up or lose sleep- there weren't any!
Just imagine discussions around a water cooler where Sally is asked "should we take Suzy Q back?". Answer-oh noooo! We called her last year to come in for an open shift and she said no even though it was her day off." If you weren't well liked and a favorite, may the forces be with you. Some VPSMs have a lot of soul searching to do. I wonder what they see when they go to bed at night. One sheep, two sheep, three sheep, or maybe Suzy Q who was wrongfully terminated. Get some rest because it's going to be a long few months in retail. Wait a minute, can't sleep because of all the unethical behaviors?
All the best to the poster, this too shall pass as it did at other times.
I don't know about commission, but no, you don't start over. They have to submit they termed you in error and get your original hire date back in for you. If you decide to do this you need to call HR Services and make sure everything has been done right to get you back on payroll. You will also have to make sure your medical benefits get started back as if you had never been termed, no lapse.
If they have to "reactivate" me, does that mean I start from scratch with earned PTO, client lists, everything? ...And WHAT?! Commission is going away? Even in big ticket?? Do you have more details?
commission is going... its being pro rated into hourly...
Problem is, you have already been termed. You would have to go through the headache of getting reactivated and counting on the company to get this right.
Everyone in our store who were severance have already been termed and dropped off every system.
I wold like to be called for insurance, etc. I worked there for 20 years. Still don’t understand the assessment and ranking method that was used.
