Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

Shady Ladies

Anyone else feel they were blatantly mislead and purposely lied to about going back to work during the very first call back? Co workers were told that if they refused to return to work after the first call back their unemployment benefits would stop. Managers lied flat out, employees went back into the Covid mess when, by law, they could have refused the first call back, stayed safely at home, and continued to collect unemployment. Macy’s leadership has always been shady, remains shady until the end. I don’t trust any of them as far as I could throw em.

Working shoes has always been like working in a sweat shop. Now it is worst. We have to get our own shoes, covering handbags most of the time, as well as intimate apparel. Despite all the hard work, they are getting rid of commissions. AND, a 15% cut! They took my pay and made deductions for stems or anything they could and then deducted 15%! So when I look at the pay, it averages a 30% decrease (even compared to 2020). Most companies that have been hurting financially during pandemic have been taking reductions in pay at managerial level and higher. Macy’s obviously has never wanted to take care of the associates. It doesn’t matter how many years you have worked for the company (no grandfather clause) nor that you have had perfect attendance nor that you are top sales/credit in the store. Shame on them!

I'm so sorry that happened to you and others at your store. Unfortunately, from stories I have heard, there's a lot of sh–ty Leadership in many stores. I never wanted to go to another store because of this. I love my store and will go down with the ship if and when it happens (unless i get cut beforehand haha cries), but I do know that those who refused to come back in the first call, were definitely given the okay with the understanding that they must come back in the second call. All others were to remain on furlough with the go-ahead or they were let go (which were most of our flex team, except a few).

YOUR STATE DEPARTMENT OF LABOR OR EQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY COMMISSION (EEOC)

What state agencies would one tell their side of the story to? Macy’s deliberately lied to employees to get then to return to work during the first call back, causing employees to be scared into going back to work. The managers told the employees to either return to work or lose unemployment benefits that were way better than the salaries Macy’s has ever paid. Employees went back to minimum wage because they were duped, intentionally, by Macy’s. Each employee has two call backs before the sagar is notified. That stinks, and the managers were well aware of what they were doing.

So it looks like they trained their managers to make you guys think you will be coming back to determine how many employees can come back. Once they have the volume of employees available for work, they send an email to the rest telling them they have been laid off. They just needed people on the sidelines until they select the people they really want and then let the managers sort out the confusion. Company did not want employees finding new jobs until they can get their pick of who they think should come back. So really, many employees may have bypassed potential job opportunities thinking the Macy job will still be there for them. So unethical.

I worked on the Bloomingdales side.Totally caught off guard after working extra hours because of staffing issues, backing up My manager and never calling out during my five years.I gave my heart and soul to this job.The company has no direction but down.So many qualified, dedicated, talented associates out.We had 16 checkouts now there are only 4.They took advantage and misrepresented matters. It was highly insulting and so unprofessional how we were told we no longer had a position. The job description has been eliminated only to be renamed.

The law just outline that your refusal to return when called that they will notify your respective state. This in turn does terminate your unemployment benefits.

Its awful now. Not the company I started with 25+ years ago. They didn't even tell me I had an option to say no the first time. Made me get the store ready to open, then laid me off a month later. Such poor treatment of tenured and dedicated employees. They will go down. They are left with the bottom of the barrel now and back stabbers.

All that is left in that company is backstabbing plotting trash. Like a pack of Hyenas hanging on to what's left of that rotting corpse. Be glad you're done with them, step back and watch them consume each other.

Well I heard it was a corporate decision and that’s why you got cut. Me this dont give a c-ap. Macy’s has turned into a sweat shop and it was only getting worse. I was doing the job of 5 people every single day. No help no one around but if a customer complains then they throw the book at you. Then they act like it’s all your fault cause your wiped out exhausted and can barley walk or talk but. Keep on smiling. I’m glad I’m out. Those who stayed will be worked to utter death

I have heard and seen employees consistently lied to, straight to their faces, over the years. I never understood how this culture is acceptable to Macy’s. Nothing is spoken about, bad news covered up until the last possible moment. As someone who had a career not in retail prior to working for Macy’s, I just don’t get how a company can be run under such horrible leadership. They are told to lie, convinced it’s for the good of the business. It really solidifies how badly the business as a whole is doing, when being rotten is the only way to keep a float.

For months I was confidently reassured by my manager that I would not be laid off. When I told him I received the email that I was laid off he was surprised that it happened to ME. He apologized for letting me think that i would be brought back. I asked it if it was a mistake and if could he look into it and reconsider me to come back he basically said no.
